4A Games and Deep Silver have announced that they are re-releasing the original versions of Metro 2033 and Last Light to GOG’s game preservation program. Based on author Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels, the first game, Metro 2033, launched in 2010 for PCs, bringing a new take on the post-apocalyptic human survivors who fled into the metro tunnels of Moscow to survive. From monsters to Nazi’s and other enemies, players found themselves encountering a myriad of challenges on a path to a better future.
Three years later, in 2013, Metro: Last Light continued the storyline and introduced new characters as players explored more of the surface world and visited other settlements to find more allies, monsters, and enemies. Last Light’s Complete Edition also includes additional DLC missions, further expanding the story through the perspectives of other characters.
“We are blown away to reach this milestone so quickly after the reveal. Thank you for your incredible support, we cannot wait to invite you into the Metro this Winter.”
– 4A Games/Deep Silver
Both games pushed PC’s to their limits by supporting SLI, Stereoscopic 3D, NVIDIA G-Sync, and incorporating the latest DirectX and PhysX features of their time. Since then, the developers have gone on to support current PC features such as ray tracing and HDR in Metro Exodus and then virtual reality in Metro Awakening. The announcement to bring the original versions, which also featured different character models, to the GOG preservation program follows the reveal of the next chapter in the franchise. Metro 2039 is set to arrive this coming winter, taking players back to Moscow in a brand new story.
