Some early access games ship. Most do not (Ed: If we’re keeping with the sailing theme, you mean sink, right?). Valheim, which sold ten million copies in five weeks in early 2021 and then settled in for a very long haul, has officially reached 1.0.
Iron Gate’s Norse survival game entered early access in February 2021 and became the defining PC gaming story of that spring, largely on the strength of a procedural world generator and a build system that rewarded actual structural thinking. It was also, notably, a game a modest PC could run beautifully, which mattered enormously in the middle of the GPU shortage a couple of GPU shortages ago. Five years of updates followed, adding biomes, bosses and systems at a pace that frustrated players who wanted faster and reassured those who wanted the studio to stay small.
Reaching 1.0 in 2026 puts a marker on something worth saying plainly: this is what early access is supposed to look like. A small team, a clear scope, regular substantial updates, and an actual finish line. The genre it helped popularize is now crowded with survival games that have been in early access longer than Valheim was and have shipped a fraction of the content. PC Gamer’s 1.0 review is out today for anyone wanting a fresh critical read rather than nostalgia.
Save compatibility is the question every returning player asks first, so check Iron Gate’s own notes before loading a five-year-old world. It also means the modding scene has a stable target for the first time, which historically triggers a wave of updated and newly viable mods within a few weeks. And for anyone who bounced off Valheim in 2021 because the mid-game felt thin, the version you quit is not the version that exists now.
The forward-looking question is what Iron Gate does next, and whether it stays independent. Studios that finish a ten-million-seller tend to attract offers. A team that spent five years quietly finishing what it started has earned the right to take its time deciding.
