Is the PlayStation 5 powerful enough to run a game at 60 FPS with ray tracing enabled? Apparently so, as Insomniac Games has updated its new Spider-Man: Miles Morales title with a new “Performance RT Mode” that lets players web-swing across a ray-traced New York at higher frame rates.

Previously, Spider-Man: Miles Morales only contained two modes: a “Fidelity” mode, which features ray tracing at 30 FPS, and a “Performance” mode that reduces the game’s resolution and graphics quality for a 60 FPS experience. The new “Performance RT Mode” sounds like a nice marriage of the two, offering both higher visual fidelity and smoother gameplay.

Insomniac Games hasn’t elaborated on how it pulled this off on the PlayStation 5’s relatively weak hardware, but a comparison shared by Push Square suggests that the graphics quality hasn’t taken any kind of serious hit between the 30 FPS and 60 FPS modes.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is available to play on both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Reviews have been positive, but the game is reportedly much shorter than its 2018 predecessor, offering around 10 hours of gameplay.
