HBO has released the first image for its upcoming live-action series based on Naughty Dog’s hit post-apocalyptic game franchise, The Last of Us. The photo, which was shared via Twitter, appears to be easily mistakable for a screenshot from one of the games, which bodes well for fans who were hoping for an honest and accurate adaptation—visually, at least.

The Last of Us series stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the key roles of Joel and Ellie, respectively. Pascal needs no introduction, having starred in numerous acclaimed productions such as The Mandalorian and Narcos, while Ramsey is best known for her role as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones. (Pascal also played Oberyn Martell in the popular fantasy series.)
A report from CTV News in August revealed that HBO’s The Last of Us series would be the largest-ever production in Canada, bringing upward of $200 million in revenue to Alberta. Alberta is also home to other major productions such as Sony Pictures’ new Ghostbusters film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
HBO has not shared a release date for The Last of Us yet, but its scheduling opens up the possibility for a late-2022 debut
