A new eight-minute gameplay video for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy showcases the interaction between Peter Quill and the other team members. The decision to make Quill (aka Star-Lord) the focus of the single-player game is a surprise, considering the team mechanics seen in other games. From Marvel’s Avengers to older Marvel titles such as Ultimate Alliance or X-Men games, it was usually a given that players could switch between characters.

It’s clear the game is designed to develop leadership skills. Guiding the team and managing resources factors in how the campaign progresses. It also affects how the team responds to Quill. During combat, Quill can call a “huddle” to boost the team. There are also exploration and puzzle-solving sequences requiring choosing team members. If the player chooses a team member who shouldn’t be used, sometimes the correct one(s) will step up to solve the problem.

It might sound like a missed opportunity to cast players as arguably the least unique member of the Guardians, but thanks to getting our hands on the game we can finally start to understand the decision. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is about more than stepping into the shoes of Star-Lord, it’s about stepping into the shoes of a leader.

Developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will launch on PC and consoles on October 26. There are some 4K screenshots here.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
