What an incredible day for May Payne fans. In a surprise announcement this evening, Remedy Entertainment revealed that it would be remaking both Max Payne and its equally brilliant sequel, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms. Both titles will be developed using the studio’s beautiful Northlight game engine, the very same engine that powered the studio’s most recent hits, Quantum Break and Control. Rockstar Games, which was responsible for the series’ third installment, is financing the project.
“We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games “We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions.”
“Max Payne has always held a special place in the hearts of everyone at Remedy, and we know the millions of fans worldwide feel the same,” said Remedy CEO, Tero Virtala. “We’re hugely excited to be working with our partners at Rockstar Games once again for the chance to bring the story, action and atmosphere of the original Max Payne games back to players in new ways.”
REMEDY ENTERTAINMENT ENTERS AGREEMENT WITH ROCKSTAR GAMES FOR NEW MAX PAYNE 1&2 PROJECT (Remedy)
Remedy Entertainment, the creators of Max Payne, are pleased to announce that they will remake the iconic Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne video games in a new development agreement with Rockstar Games.
The relationship between Remedy and Rockstar Games dates back to the original release of the critically acclaimed Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne games, developed by Remedy and published by Rockstar Games. Both games left an indelible mark in popular culture, lauded for their neo-noir atmosphere, groundbreaking storytelling and “bullet-time” gunplay.
Under the development agreement signed today, Remedy will develop the games as a single title for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S using its proprietary Northlight game engine. The game’s development budget will be financed by Rockstar Games, the size of which will be in line with a typical Remedy AAA-game production. Under the agreement, Remedy has a royalty opportunity after Rockstar Games has recouped its development, marketing, and other costs for distributing and publishing the game.
The project is currently in the concept development stage.

Join Discussion →One of my favorite games back then. The Matrix mod was great.
This should be interesting. I could replay these on a modern engine.
See you in 2026.
I never got around to completing the original Max Payne or playing its sequels - so definitely interested in these remasters.
The article says they will be remakes, not remasters. In any case, Max Payne 1 and 2 were very good games, definitely worth playing. 3 wasn't bad either. Gameplay-wise, 2 was definitely the best one. They've all been on sale for super-cheap at various times throughout the years. Hoping the remakes are just as good if not better.
I remember enjoying the first 2, never played the 3rd. I think I could get into the remakes if done right. Blizzard and Rockstar have shown how easy it is to screw up new versions of old games.
I have a lot of good old games on GOG and Steam, and early 3rd person 3D haven't held up well for me. I recently replayed Syndicate (2D sprites, 1993), but I didn't get through the intro mission in Syndicate Wars (3D, 1996).
The remake of System Shock is finally nearing release. Well see how it does 7(?) years after the original Kickstarter.
O, RLY? Is it actually releasing this time?
Allegedly...
Can I sell re-makes of my kindergarten finger paintings on Steam? Or maybe one of those NFT things...
As NFTs, sure.
I only finished the first one and never played the 3rd one. Seems like a good time to pay them a visit.
The third one is only max payne by name. It is an alright action game, just pretend the protagonist is not max payne, because apart from one contrieved flashback mission it has no connection to the previous games, it actually tries to make fun of them at times. And the character is unrecognizable.
Here is my rant on the game: max-payne-3-2012
I knew there was a reason I never played the third one.
Yeah in terms of tone, atmosphere, characters and such, Max Payne 3 is nothing like the first two games.
