Conclusion

The SilverStone NJ600 is one of just a handful of fanless power supplies on the market. It is, also, the first fanless power supply that we have seen from SilverStone at TheFPSReview. On top of that, it is also the first SilverStone and first power supply overall we have seen. However, over the years SilverStone fanless units have been very good to excellent products in the broader market so we see a good pedigree shaping up for this unit. Today though, SilverStone is stretching things a bit as 600W is the largest capacity fanless unit they have produced. Will this prove to be just too much capacity in a fanless unit to match the expectations we have from a brand like SilverStone? Or will this unit be another silent champion? Let’s see.

Build Quality

Today’s SilverStone NJ600 starts things off with a build quality that does not differ much from what we would expect from a premium brand like SilverStone. Since this unit is based on the Seasonic PRIME 600 Titanium Fanless the topology and general build are the same. However, externally, we do see a few differences. The most noticeable difference is the different finish that this unit has and the lack of bulges for capacitors on some of the cables. While arguably the finish on this unit is nicer than what Seasonic uses, the fact that you can see where the PRIME logo was removed and no SilverStone branding was placed instead sort of cancels that out.

When we move to the interior of the unit, we see the familiar PRIME Fanless topology and build quality. As such, the topology is very modern and the component selection is very high quality once more. Among these components, we find Nippon Chemi-con and FPCAP solid capacitors along with Nippon Chemi-con standard capacitors. The actual integration is excellent once more and very fitting for a high end product like this. Moving on to the support side of things, we know that this unit is covered by a 5 year warranty (the longest SilverStone offers) and very good documentation as always.

Load Testing

Today’s SilverStone NJ600 provides us with some excellent results. Indeed, we saw voltage regulation of 0.05v on the 12v rail, 0.03v on the 5v rail, and 0.03v on the 3.3v rail. This voltage regulation is certainly excellent in absolute terms and is easily competitive with other products on the market. With that for a start to the day, our performance metrics are looking good. Moving on to the unit’s efficiency, we see that it ranged from 89.78% to 93.32% at 120v and of 89.30% to 92.18%at 100v. When we look at the 80 Plus tests, we see that the NJ600 posted efficiency values of 92.15%-93.21%-91.49% using 80 Plus’ load testing parameters. This put the unit just under the 80 Plus Titanium standards. Lastly, this unit passed our Torture Test in fine shape which is good to see from a fanless unit in particular.

When we look at the Transient Load Tests results for the SilverStone NJ600 today, we see results that look a lot like what we saw above. When directly loaded, the 12v rail showed a peak change of ~340mV and the 5v rail had a peak change of ~40mV. During the 12v load, the unloaded 5v rail saw a peak change of ~35mV. In absolute terms, those are certainly excellent for any unit let alone a 600W unit that is fanless. Now, again, these results would be right up there at the very forefront of comparable products and that is never a bad place to be when it comes to performance metrics!

DC Output Quality

The DC Output Quality results for the SilverStone NJ600 were very good to excellent depending on how we look at them today. We saw peak values of just ~20mV of ripple/noise on the 12v rail, ~15mV of ripple/noise on the 5v rail, and ~10mV of ripple/noise on the 3.3v rail. When it comes to absolute values, these are excellent numbers and will be so far inside of the specification limits that they will be suitable in just about any scenario. When we look at relative figures we, again, don’t have directly comparable products that we have seen yet but relative to what we know is on the market this unit did very well again and is more than just competitive.

Noise

Today’s SilverStone NJ600 is a fanless power supply and, as such, it is essentially silent. SilverStone has further noted that they went to extra care to eliminate not only the fan noise (by removing the fan), but also random electrical noise. During our testing today, we did not detect any random electrical noise.

Final Points & Summary

The SilverStone NJ600 is right there with the best fanless power supplies on the market and it is going to be one the best 600W units as well. Given it’s lineage, that may not be a surprise and it ends up being the case because of the outstanding build quality, excellent voltage regulation, outstanding DC Output Quality, and outstanding Transient Load Test results. All of this is done while this unit lacks a fan to cool it which makes this all a bit tougher to achieve.

With one fan tied behind its back, the NJ600 came out of our testing today as an amazing fanless power supply. Actually, just an amazing power supply in general as this unit could wipe the floor with fan cooled models as well. This means this unit has all the performance capabilities one could need, but does it have the right price? Well, today, we find the NJ600 coming in at ~$200. As such, there is nothing to sneeze at when it comes to cost but with a product that performs like almost no other you have to pay to play.
