If you’re working on a budget build it will be hard to beat this. How about a brand new, newly released processor for fifty bucks? AMD’s got you covered. Ensuring that any enthusiast can get their foot in the door they’ve released the AMD Athlon 3000G which even comes with it’s own graphics and is unlocked for overclocking.

CPU Specs:

  • 2 cores/4 threads
  • Base clock at 3.5 Ghz
  • L1 Cache 192KB
  • L2 Cache 1MB
  • L3 Cache 4MB
  • AM4 Socket
  • TDP 35W

GPU Specs:

  • Radeon Vega 3
  • 192* Cores at 1100 Mhz

Now if needing something for a HTPC or some very non-demanding gaming then this could be a good starting point. Even if you don’t use the GPU it could be paired with a low cost dedicated card and still keep costs down.

*The AMD site lists the core count as being 3 but TechSpot has indicated it’s actually 192 cores which seems far more plausible. Likely a typo since they report it’s a Radeon Vega 3.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
