4K Overclocked Radeon RX 6800 XT Performance
Now we will continue testing 4K resolution. This will be much more demanding on the video cards and should be where Overclocking really shines through for showing performance advantages. All games are using built-in benchmarks, when not applicable we are using a manual run-through. Ray Tracing performance will be shown on a separate page.
Cyberpunk 2077
In Cyberpunk 2077 we are running the version 1.04 patch, as this was the latest at the time of evaluation. As we mentioned previously, new patches may change performance. Right now, performance at 4K is quite abysmal on all fronts. Running at the “Ultra” Quick Preset at 4K the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is the slowest at 33FPS. Overclocking it improves performance by 7%. This makes the game a little more bearable at 36FPS. However, the default performance on the GeForce RTX 3080 FE is higher. That said, 37FPS is still quite slow in this game, and we would prefer more performance to really enjoy 4K gameplay.
It seems that it takes overclocking the Radeon RX 6800 XT to even come close to the RTX 3080 FE at 4K in this game right now. Hopefully, new game patches will improve 4K performance.
Watch Dogs Legion
In Watch Dogs at 4K running the “Ultra” preset the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is “just” playable. It’s the minimum framerates that really suffer. Overclocking the video card only improves performance by 8%, but that’s only 54FPS average. It’s better, but we’d prefer to be at 60FPS average if we could. Even the GeForce RTX 3080 FE cannot pull that off though and is as fast as the overclocked Radeon RX 6800 XT. Once again it takes overclocking the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT to equal RTX 3080 FE performance at 4K.
Horizon Zero Dawn
Quite shockingly, the GeForce RTX 3080 FE is actually faster than even the overclocked AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT in this game at 4K. This was the opposite at 1440p, where the AMD video card took a big win. It seems at 4K it is struggling more. At 72FPS at default it is no where near RTX 3080 FE performance. It once again takes overclocking it to come near to RTX 3080 FE performance at 4K. We get an 8% performance increase with the overclock.
Red Dead Redemption 2
In Red Dead Redemption 2 we see much the same. The default AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT just cannot keep up with the RTX 3080 FE at 4K. Once we overclock it though, then it is competitive. Performance increases by 6% by overclocking it. The game is playable, but just barely.
Ghost Recon Breakpoint
In Ghost Recon Breakpoint the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT falls behind the GeForce RTX 3080 FE. Once we overclock it performance improves by 8% and performance is now on par with GeForce RTX 3080 FE.
Control
Just as we saw at 1440p, Control also suffers on the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT at 4K. It’s playable, barely, but it falls behind the GeForce RTX 3080 FE which is much more playable at 60FPS. Overclocking the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT improves performance by 11% in this game, but it isn’t enough to overcome the RTX 3080 FE’s performance.
Wolfenstein Youngblood
Wolfenstein Youngblood is very playable at 4K. Overclocking the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT improves performance by 5% but it still remains under RTX 3080 FE performance at 4K.
The Division 2
The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is playable in this game at 4K. Overclocking it improves performance by 5%. However, the GeForce RTX 3080 FE is still faster at 4K.
Metro Exodus
In Metro Exodus the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT is on the border of being playable. Unfortunately overclocking it doesn’t help all that much. Performance between the RTX 3080 FE and Overclocked AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT are very close.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT really lags behind the GeForce RTX 3080 FE in this game at 4K with the highest settings. Overclocking the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT helps performance quite a bit, and is playable, but only just competes with the default RTX 3080 FE performance.
Overall, 4K performance on the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT doesn’t seem to be very competitive with the GeForce RTX 3080 FE. It seems the Radeon RX 6800 XT is struggling more at 4K to us.
