BMW drivers have a reputation for being a-holes on the road, and it’s instances like these that make us suspect that stereotype might have some truth behind it. Simon Byrne, the same guy behind that massive mining rig comprising 78 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards, has returned with another brilliant way of pissing enthusiasts off: building a mining rig in his $147,500+ gas/electric BMW i8 sports car.

“The only practical use for the trunk of an i8 is to home a 6 x RTX 3080 mining rig,” Byrne declared. “No gamers were harmed in the making of this photo.”

Tom’s Hardware reached out to Byrne to determine whether the mining rig is real or not, and he responded in the affirmative, noting that he did it “just to annoy gamers.” He also had the following to say about cryptocurrency, which is presumably how he’s making most of his money.

“Cryptocurrency is open-sourced & decentralized,” he said. “It’s trustless, and there isn’t interference from a third party. No one owns or controls it, and it does not have a governing body.”

“Crypto may be driven by code, but it’s fueled by a passionate, altruistic, open-sourced community. Individuals who voluntarily invest their time & energy helping others without coercion or the threat of violence. They recognize that their success is dependant on the success of others. I’m not in Crypto to make a fast buck, but I’ll take the bonus; I’m in it because it’s a vision of a utopian world where services are acquired through voluntary relationships.”
