Crystal Dynamics has released a new video related to the 25th anniversary of Tomb Raider and its iconic lead, Lara Croft. Among the video’s community updates, nostalgic content, and other surprises, game director Will Kerslake revealed that the next Tomb Raider game will attempt to merge the timelines of all of the games that came before it, including the original titles from franchise creator Core Design. This seems like an interesting challenge, being that Crystal Dynamics’ reboot gave Tomb Raider fans a significantly different Lara (it served as an origin story, after all).

“We have big ambitions for the future of Tomb Raider. Our origin trilogy back in 2013 told the story of Lara Croft’s early days where she was forged into a survivor, became a hero, and ultimately, the Tomb Raider,” Kerslake said. “The classic games featured a seasoned and confident adventurer, traveling the world, unlocking its secrets, often standing alone against forces of cataclysmic consequence.”

“We envision the future of Tomb Raider in all its forms as unfolding in a time beyond these established adventures, telling stories that build upon the breadth of both Core Design’s and Crystal Dynamics’ games and working to unify these timelines. With Tomb Raider’s extensive history, this is no easy task! We ask everyone to be patient as we go through the development process.”

Kerslake admitted that Crystal Dynamics will not be revealing the next Tomb Raider game any time soon (“we don’t have plans for a major game announcement in the near future”), but Tomb Raider fans can look forward to a new anime series being developed by Netflix and Legendary Television, which we reported on yesterday.

“Lara Croft, one of the video game world’s most iconic adventurers, makes her anime debut in an all new series,” a synopsis reads. “Picking up after the events of the highly successful Tomb Raider video-game reboot trilogy, the animated series will chart the globetrotting heroine’s latest, greatest adventure. Twenty-five years after her first game appeared, Lara continues to explore new territory.”
