With RAM prices where they are, a lot of people buying a PC this year are getting 8GB whether they like it or not. Microsoft finally has some good news for them.
In a Windows Experience Blog post published Thursday, Microsoft says improvements rolling out broadly make Windows 11 up to 20% more responsive. It points to Start, File Explorer, Search, Snipping Tool, Microsoft 365 and Edge. The bigger claim is about memory management.
According to Microsoft, Windows can now keep up to 2GB more of your active data in memory rather than paging it out to slower storage. The company says this makes an especially meaningful difference on 8GB machines. On PCs with 8GB or less, Widgets now load only when you open them, which Microsoft says frees up more than 200MB for apps. Both claims carry footnotes in the post, so expect them to describe best-case lab conditions rather than every system.
The same update brings Start and taskbar personalization, quieter Widgets and more Windows Update control. Microsoft also claims AirPods pairing is up to 15 seconds faster.
How to tell if this matters for you
Open Task Manager, go to Performance, then Memory. If “In use” routinely sits near your installed total with a big Committed figure, you’re paging to disk. You’re the user Microsoft is talking about. On a 16GB or 32GB system you probably won’t feel much. As we noted when Windows 11 26H2 arrived, the earlier memory gains mostly showed up on high-capacity systems.
Our take: this is overdue, and the timing is not an accident. Memory makers can’t keep up with AI demand, PC shipments have fallen off a cliff, and even DDR4 refuses to die because it’s what people can afford. An OS that wastes less RAM is worth more right now than almost any feature Microsoft could ship.
A couple of hundred megabytes from lazy-loading Widgets is nice. But it also tells you how much Windows was spending on things nobody asked for. Gamers on 8GB should still expect modern titles to struggle. Smarter paging can’t conjure capacity that isn’t there. The real test is whether these gains hold up.
Have an 8GB machine? Let us know in the forums whether it feels any snappier after updating (Ed: Why would any of our readers only have 8GB of RAM?).
