James Cameron’s groundbreaking science-fiction blockbuster, Avatar, has reclaimed its place as the highest-grossing film of all time at the global box office. The victory was reported by Deadline this morning, which confirmed that Avatar’s recent re-release in China managed to propel it above Avengers: Endgame by adding an estimated RMB 58M ($8.9M) to its already striking worldwide total. Metrics from Box Office Mojo suggest that Marvel’s superhero mashup is now behind by around $7.82 million.

“Disney now puts Avatar’s worldwide gross at an estimated $2.802B versus Endgame’s $2.797B,” Deadline wrote. “Avatar, which now falls under the Disney umbrella after the Fox acquisition, first became the top-selling global release of all time in 2010 when it passed Cameron’s own 1997 Titanic. In July 2019, Endgame overtook Avatar — and now the latter is back on top.”

“We are proud to reach this great milestone, but Jim and I are most thrilled that the film is back in theaters during these unprecedented times, and we want to thank our Chinese fans for their support,” a statement from Avatar producer Jon Landau reads. “We are hard at work on the next Avatar films and look forward to sharing the continuation of this epic story for years to come.”

Avatar initially debuted over a decade ago in 2009 but continues to stun viewers with its gorgeous computer imagery and special effects. Its second installment, Avatar 2, is slated for release on December 16, 2022 and will attempt to dazzle audiences all over again by taking them to the depths of Pandora and its underwater worlds. Cameron reportedly shot his sequel with high-refresh-rate cameras and utilized state-of-the-art motion capture techniques to bring the film to life.
