Gameplay Performance Continued

AMD is targeting 1440p as the resolution for the best experience with this video card.  Therefore, we will test at 1440p and see if the Radeon RX 6700 XT has what it takes to offer a good 1440p gameplay experience.  We will also test Ray Tracing, but that will be on a separate page.

NOTE that in the graphs, “SAM ON” means AMD Smart Access Memory is enabled.  When you see “SAM OFF” that means AMD Smart Access Memory is disabled, which is the default motherboard settings.

Horizon Zero Dawn

In Horizon Zero Dawn we enable the “Ultimate Quality” graphics option.  We utilize the built-in benchmark for testing.

In Horizon Zero Dawn the AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT does a great job at 1440p with the highest in-game settings.  It provides mid-90’s performance, which is very playable.  Turning SAM ON or OFF made no difference in performance, within the margin of error.  It is also very clear that this performance level matches the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti which provides the same level of gameplay experience.  The GeForce RTX 3070 is 9% faster.

If you are upgrading from the Radeon RX 5700 XT you’ll get a 28% performance increase.

Red Dead Redemption 2

In Red Dead Redemption 2 we run the game in the Vulkan API.  We set all the in-game options up to “Ultra” or the highest value, except for MSAA.  We use the built-in benchmark for testing.

This game can be demanding at 1440p when you crank up all the graphics settings like we have.  The new AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT seems to pull through though and does provide us a playable gameplay experience. That means 1440p with the highest in-game settings playable on the Radeon RX 6700 XT in this game.  That also matches exactly with the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, which also allows the same experience.

It seems we do get a slight boost in performance by enabling AMD Smart Access Memory in this game.  Turning it ON gave us a 6% performance increase which did help.  If you are upgrading from the Radeon RX 5700 XT you’ll get a 39% performance increase.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint

In Ghost Recon Breakpoint we run the game in the Vulkan API.  We set the graphics options in the game to “Ultimate” textures and “Ultimate” graphics settings and set the resolution as needed.  We use the built-in benchmark for testing.

The AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT once again does a great job in Ghost Recon Breakpoint.  We are able to play very well at 1440p with the highest in-game settings.  The Radeon RX 6700 XT does receive a 4% improvement in performance by turning on SAM, but the game was already playable anyway.  By enabling SAM the Radeon RX 6700 XT equals the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti performance exactly.  Without it, it was slower than the RTX 3060 Ti, however.  The RTX 3070 is still on top.

If you are upgrading from the Radeon RX 5700 XT you’ll get a 27% performance improvement.

Wolfenstein Youngblood

In Wolfenstein Youngblood the game runs in the Vulkan API.  We set the graphics option to “Mein Leben!” for the highest settings.  We enable Ray Tracing and DLSS on Quality Mode as needed.  When not using DLSS the NVIDIA Adaptive Shading option is on Quality.  We leave the rest of the settings at default.  We use the built-in benchmark of Riverside for testing.

This game is interesting.  On the one hand, the AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT is clearly playable at 1440p with the highest in-game settings.  It’s producing 169FPS average, so the game is of course extremely playable.  You’ll be able to utilize high refresh rates here.  It also seems SAM made a little impact, about 2%.

On the other hand, this is the first time the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti has actually outpaced the Radeon RX 6700 XT by so much.  In this case 6%.  That puts the Radeon RX 6700 XT on the “bottom” in terms of performance on this chart, still way above the RX 5700 XT of course.  In fact, compared to the Radeon RX 5700 XT you’ll gain 33% more performance by upgrading to the Radeon RX 6700 XT.  So again, the game is very playable on the Radeon RX 6700 XT and that’s what matters most.
