Watch Dogs Legions

Watch Dogs Legions came out just October of last year, and with it came some impressive next-generation visuals through its heavy use of ray tracing. Atop of that, this game includes a high-resolution texture option which we enable in all our testing. With everything at the max, this game can really stress current gaming systems. Let’s go ahead and see how the chart looks now that the games been out a little while and seen some updates.

In this scenario we are testing without any Ray Tracing options enabled while using the “Ultra” graphics preset at 1440P. What we get is a tie between the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT and its MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO competitor. On the other hand, our ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC Edition sits squarely in the last place with an average of 49 FPS, equating to a 23% gap in favor of our Radeon card.

When we push things up with a little manual overclocking the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT manages a 64 FPS average. That’s 3% faster than its stock performance as well as the MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO. Performance between the two higher-end cards was identical under these conditions. We see a 26% performance advantage over the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC Edition when our overclock is applied.

Turning on Ray Tracing changes the performance by a great deal and our RDNA2 video card loses to both the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC Edition and the MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO. At stock, our ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT was 37% slower than the MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO.

Our ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC Edition also managed to outperform the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT by 25%. The ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT produced a 33 FPS average while the MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO managed 48 FPS and our ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC Edition managed 44 FPS. This leads to a situation where even the lowly ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC Editionends up winning.

With overclocking we pushed our average up to 35 FPS, or 5.8% faster than stock. This still failed to get us near either of the competing cards in our tests. When contrasted with the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC we still end up with a loss but this time by 22% instead of 25%.

The MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO also maintains its lead, with the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT improving its standing from 37% to 31%, a dismal result. This game shows how weak AMD’s Ray Tracing performance can be if not optimized well. For those looking to play with Ray Tracing on, it is certainly possible but requires the user to adjust their settings down further in order to obtain a playable frame rate.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn is an action-adventure game ported for release on PC as of August 7th, 2020. The game makes use of the DX12 API as its only option. We will be utilizing the game’s built-in benchmark and graphics presets, which range from Favor Performance, Orginal (PS4 Fidelity), Favor Quality, and Ultimate Quality.

ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT OC Edition horizon zero dawn

Keeping with our 1440P resolution, Horizon Zero Dawn saw a minor difference between the two more expensive cards in this comparison. With things set to stock the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT was maintaining a 93 FPS average, 1 FPS over the MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO. Our ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC fell expectedly behind with its 77 FPS average, 19% slower than the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT.

When overclocked, our ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT was able to extract 4% more performance than we were getting stock, for a 97 FPS average. This equates to 5% more performance than the MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO and 23% faster than the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC. In this title, our two higher-tier video cards end up in a dead heat with scores that offer no appreciable difference until an overclock is applied.

F1-2020

F1-2020 is a Codemasters title and the latest release in the series of racing games. For this game we stuck to the Italy map for our run-through, using the internal benchmark for our data.

This title was no struggle for any of the cards in our comparison today, with the lowest average frame rate totaling 115 FPS. A quick look at the graph shows that our RDNA2 video cards are leading the pack by a razor-thin margin. The stock performance of the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT was capable of maintaining a 124 FPS average at 1440P and max settings.

This is a bit faster than the MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO, but not by an amount one would be able to discern, remember we are talking about a change in average FPS of a mere +3 FPS (2%). The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC Edition was lagging behind the Radeon card by 8% which isn’t a bad showing given the difference in video card tier here.

Overclocking resulted in a few extra frames, at a boost of 4% more performance. Once we applied our custom profile in ASUS GPU Tweak III we saw our average framerate move up by +5 FPS. This result was 6% faster than the MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO and 11% faster than the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC Edition.

Wolfenstein Youngblood

Wolfenstein Youngblood is a 2019 title published by Bethesda Softworks that’s noteworthy for receiving an update in 2020 that enabled Ray Tracing for this id Tech 6 powered game. In this title, we will be using the Mein Leben settings at 1440P resolution and relying on the built-in riverside benchmark. It’s important to note that currently, RDNA2 cards do not support Ray Tracing used in this title. We will only be testing rasterization-based performance here.

ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT OC Edition wolfenstein youngblood

Wolfenstein Youngblood performed rather well with the RDNA2 architecture. Our ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT managed to nip at the heels of the MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO. The difference in average FPS was a mere 3 FPS (2%), which is a close result. Nevertheless, it’s not impressive given the higher cost of a Radeon RX 6700 XT in comparison to the MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO. When compared with ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC Edition’s 133 FPS average we see the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT come out ahead with a 24% advantage.

Overclocking allows the RDNA2 GPU to jump past its own stock performance by 3% and it jumps past the MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO by 2%. Our ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT pushed its lead over the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC Edition up to 28%, which is much more like it given the price disparity between the two.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a Rockstar Games title that needs no introduction to our community, being the high-profile title that it is. Launched for PC on December 5th, 2019, this game is known to be demanding for almost any video card. At our 1440P resolution, we are seeing the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6700 XT coming out on top in this rasterization-based title. The win isn’t massive but its reality, with its stock average of 60 FPS beating out the MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO’s 58 FPS average by 3%. Compared to the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC Edition we are pushing 24% more frames per second average.

Overclocking gains us 6% resulting in good 64 FPS average gameplay experience at this resolution. That performance bump grows our lead over the MSI RTX 3060 Ti GAMING X TRIO to about 10% which is a good result. The gameplay experience is 30% faster than the lower tier ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC Edition. While it’s not a blowout, it’s still a clear win for the RDNA2 solution.
