Disk Copy Benchmarks

We are using AS SSD’s Copy Benchmark tool to test the duration of file copy for ISO, Program, and Game data.  The benchmark outputs the duration in minutes and seconds, and lower is better.

MSI SPATIUM M480 2TB HS PCIe 4.0 Gen4 NVMe SSD AS SSD ISO

In AS SSD’s Copy Benchmark for ISO files, the MSI SPATIUM M480 HS 2TB SSD performed on par with the MSI SPATIUM M470, copying at 0.44 seconds.  This is very fast, and is up there with the fastest of the SSDs, beating the CORSAIR Force MP600 by 0.04 seconds.  Keep in mind the MSI SPATIUM M480 is a larger SSD, 2TB in total size, so this is commendable.

MSI SPATIUM M480 2TB HS PCIe 4.0 Gen4 NVMe SSD AS SSD Program

This test is interesting, AS SSD’s “Program” copy test, the MSI SPATIUM M480 2TB drive did take the longest time, which is the worse result.  Keep in mind a few things here, we know that the Program test tests many small file sizes.  We already know that the random performance of the SSD is just under, according to CrystalDiskMark.  Being that the SSD is also 2TB in capacity, reading and writing this larger capacity does cause some latency to occur.

MSI SPATIUM M480 2TB HS PCIe 4.0 Gen4 NVMe SSD AS SSD Game

Similar to the “Program” copy test, in AS SSD’s “Game” copy test, the MSI SPATIUM M480 2TB SSD falls behind again.  The game copy test uses both large and small file sizes, so it’s a mix of file sizes.

For the record, in this review, this SSD was installed on the M_1 M.2 slot on the motherboard, which utilizes its PCI-Express lanes connected directly with the CPU.  We also tried the M_2 slot, that connects with the chipset, and experienced the exact same results.  Therefore, if there are any latency issues with the PCI-Express bus, they exist from both slots here, as we tried both, and had similar results.

DiskBench

With DiskBench we place a 50GB single file onto the test drive. We copy this file from the test drive to a new folder on the test drive, volume to volume. This tests the performance the drive is able to copy a file from itself to itself as if you were copying files on the same drive. Results are in duration Seconds, lower is better.

MSI SPATIUM M480 2TB HS PCIe 4.0 Gen4 NVMe SSD DiskBench

Using our own custom large 50GB file copy, we experienced a different result than the small file size of “Program” and “Game” in AS SSD’s benchmark.  Utilizing a large single-file size, the MSI SPATIUM M480 2TB SSD actually resulted in the fastest copy time among all of our SSDs.  It copied the large file volume-to-volume in just 21.4 seconds, beating the other drives by 3 seconds.  Therefore, file-copy can be faster on this SSD, if it’s a large file size.
