Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that one of Marvel’s most popular heroes, Spider-Man, is finally being added to Marvel’s Avengers later this month. The iconic web slinger will be available on November 30 as part of the game’s Spider-Man: With Great Power Hero Event, which features a new story centered on Peter Parker. The event is exclusive to the PS4 and PS5 version of the game.

From Crystal Dynamics:

[…] Peter Parker uncovers AIM’s new plan to acquire technology that could make their Synthoid army unstoppable and total domination inevitable. He must partner with the Avengers to stop this looming threat, and forms a tentative friendship with Ms. Marvel and Black Widow while keeping his identity hidden. As a Hero accustomed to working solo, he struggles with the new dynamics of working with a team. Will he join up full time with the Avengers, or stay independent in his fight against AIM?

Marvel’s Avengers is also receiving the following updates to its gameplay systems:

  • Power-Level Increase – The maximum Power Level achievable will increase from 150 to 175. Want the best gear? Then you’ll have to complete the game’s toughest challenge. The new four-player Klaw Raid: Discordant Sound is waiting for you.
  • Gear Upgrading – You will be able to recycle gear of a higher power level to upgrade your current gear to match the higher-power level of the consumed item (with a few exceptions).
  • Shipments – We’ve heard your requests for a path to earn coveted Cosmetics, resources, and other items via gameplay, as well as a place to use your plentiful Units. Enter the Shipments feature! Each Shipment costs 500 Units (the currency earned while playing the game) and pulls from a collection of possible items, but you can see what is in the current Shipment before you buy it with Units. There is a small chance of the Shipment containing a premium Outfit unavailable via any other means of acquisition. But luck isn’t required to get the Outfit—you’ll automatically receive it after claiming 100 Shipments. We’ll talk more about Shipments in the coming weeks.
  • Per-Hero Weekly Objectives – Starting with the Seeking the Super Adaptoid Mission Chain and the Klaw Raid: Discordant Sound, you can farm the weekly rewards once a week for each eligible Hero, rather than for only one Hero per week. We’re actively exploring expanding this Hero-Bound system to other current and future activities as well. Happy gear hunting!

It’s unclear how long Crystal Dynamics will be charged with supporting Marvel’s Avengers. Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda admitted that he was disappointed in the game’s performance in an annual report that was published earlier this year, going so far as to suggest that Crystal Dynamics was not the right fit for Marvel’s Avengers GaaS (Games as a Service) model.

“[…] it has unfortunately not proven as successful as we would have liked,” Matsuda said. “Nonetheless, taking on the GaaS model highlighted issues that we are likely to face in future game development efforts such as the need to select game designs that mesh with the unique attributes and tastes of our studios and development teams.”

“While the new challenge that we tackled with this title produced a disappointing outcome, we are certain that the GaaS approach will grow in importance as gaming becomes more service oriented. How we go about creating new experiences by incorporating this trend into our game design is a key question that we will need to answer going forward.”
