Conclusion

Today we took a look at XPG’s ALPHA wireless gaming mouse. The wireless version reviewed retails for $69.99 at release, with the wired version coming in at $49.99, both very reasonable for a well-built mouse with premium components and comprehensive software.

FPS Gaming

The XPG ALPHA is right at home for FPS gaming. Following a proven formula with familiar presets, we put the ALPHA to use while in the middle of a gaming session and had no problem adjusting to it in its out of box state.

It should be noted that it has become fairly difficult to make a ‘bad’ mouse. Quality components have more or less been standardized by industry leaders and potential disruptors alike, and gamers tend to gravitate toward similarly standard layouts and presets.

The margin for innovation is then left largely to mouse shape, size, weight, aesthetics, and software. These factors do take a decent amount of effort on the part of manufacturers, and we can state that XPG has definitely done its homework with the ALPHA.

General Use

As a decidedly middle-of-the-road entry in terms of size, shape, and weight, the XPG ALPHA excels in desktop and productivity use. The lack of additional buttons found on some alternatives could be a cause of concern for some but the bases are definitely covered.

Further, while not evaluated for gaming performance, the availability of Bluetooth connectivity does expand the versatility of the XPG ALPHA for desktop users, though note that performance and battery life may vary.

Wireless Use

As a decidedly gaming entry, the XPG ALPHA ships with a 2.4GHz wireless dongle for higher reliability and lower latency than Bluetooth can provide while maintaining gaming-grade performance.

In this mode, we did not experience any connection issues, and battery life remained strong. The power conserving capability integrated into the XPG ALPHA was observed to be very effective and the low battery warning effect was not observed during testing.

While the longevity of wireless peripherals containing integrated, non-user-replaceable batteries is always a concern, the technology is mature, and all observations of the XPG ALPHA in use point to competitive battery life, perhaps leaning more toward weeks rather than days.

Final Points

Overall, the XPG ALPHA Wireless Gaming Mouse represents a very serious entry from a company that appears to be very serious about providing solutions to gamers. As an overall package, there’s quite a bit to like about the XPG ALPHA, with standouts being build quality, battery life, wireless responsiveness, and comprehensive software. These attributes alone represent a very solid, well though-out entry, and at US$69.99 represent a great value for those looking for a wireless ergonomic gaming mouse that supports both low-latency 2.4GHz and Bluetooth operation.

The lack of a clear battery level indicator and questionable color response from the RGB LEDs are slight negatives, but absolutely do not detract from what the XPG ALPHA brings to gamers, and thus earn the XPG ALPHA our Silver Award. This is a feature-rich mouse, with a lot of software customization and functionality built-in for any enthusiast gamer to tweak the mouse to their liking, for whatever genre of game is being played. It has a high degree of customizability and control.
