A third Sonic the Hedgehog movie is on the way, and not only that, it already has a release date.

As tweeted by the official Sonic the Hedgehog account, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will spin dash its way into theaters on December 20, 2024. “Running faster, flying higher, and punching harder,” the tweet reads—and while not much else was shared beyond that, a short GIF can seemingly confirm that Sonic will be teaming up with Tails and Knuckles to tackle his next challenge.

That challenge will likely come in the form of Shadow the Hedgehog, according to Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s post-credits scene, which teased the fan-favorite antihero that was originally introduced in 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2 as one of the blue bomber’s chief rivals.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 released in theaters overseas in March 2022 and did very well, dashing past a $400 million global box office milestone, according to a report from Deadline dated June 22, 2022. A breakdown of the grosses from Box Office Mojo can also reveal that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has made close to $191 million domestically and $211 million internationally.

“With Sonic the Hedgehog 2, our filmmakers and producing partners delivered the high-quality theatrical experience that the whole family had been waiting for, and we are thrilled with the enthusiastic global response to the characters and world we have created out of the beloved Sonic IP,” said Paramount Pictures’ president of worldwide marketing and distribution, Marc Weinstock, following the sequel’s success.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is just one of the many things that Sonic fans can look forward to. In addition to Sonic Frontiers, an upcoming open-world game, Sega’s mascot is also headed to Netflix as part of a new animated series. The show, dubbed Sonic Prime, will comprise 24 episodes and premiere worldwide on the streamer this year.
