Ray Tracing Performance

In each of the following games, we now enable the Ray Tracing settings.  The resolution and settings are selected to give playable FPS in the same benchmarks or manual run-throughs as the previous section.  In the three most graphically challenging games (Dying Light 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and WatchDogs Legion) the resolution was lowered to 1080p.  DLSS and FSR are also included in the games that support them.

F1 2022

In this game, we were able to set the resolution to 1440p and use “ultra” Ray Tracing.  The gameplay was choppy without DLSS.  With DLSS we saw a smooth flow of cars around the circuit.  The MSI RX 6650XT was bested once again by 40% and 25%.  It struggled without FSR. Overclocking the ZOTAC GAMING RTX 3060Ti gained about 3%.

Dying Light 2

With the game running at 1080p and Ray Tracing set to “low” our GIGABYTE Aorus 3060Ti Elite results were almost double that of the MSI Rx 6650 XT GAMING X.  The game was very playable in these settings and looked wonderful. Overclocking gained only about 3%. The game ran so well that we selected 1440p and “low” RT settings to see what the video card could do.  The video card could register 62FPS with DLSS enabled but the texture loading was quite obvious. The MSI RX 6650 XT was very much out of the running in this game.

FarCry 6

Once again we were able to select 1440p.  With “ultra” graphics, HD textures and DXR on, this time the MSI RX 6650 XT was able to edge ahead. Barely. It was a dead heat when FSR was enabled. Overclocking didn’t see any improvement in FPS, but the game was pretty and the reflections on wet surfaces were very realistic. Surprisingly, the default GIGABYTE Aorus 3060Ti Elite bested its overclocked partner in this game without upscaling.

Cyberpunk 2077

This game calls for lowering the resolution to 1080p.  We also set RayTracing to “Low”. It was a nice compromise as the GIGABYTE Aorus 3060Ti Elite performed very well with and without DLSS.  The game visuals are very realistic.  Overclocking added roughly 5% gain. The MSI RX 6650XT had trouble at 1080 until FSR was enabled.  Rasterized and the upscaled performance lacked by nearly 25%, although at 70 FPS the game was smooth and enjoyable.

Given the FPS using DLSS, we set the resolution to 1440p for a run-through.  Unfortunately, our video card just didn’t have the stuff.  The FPS showed 57, but the game was choppy and not enjoyable.

Watch Dogs Legion

This game is very graphically intense even at the 1080p level.  Ray Tracing was set to “ultra” which may also have put a strain on the video cards. There was quite a bit of “hitching” in the benchmark until DLSS was enabled.  At that point, the GIGABYTE Aorus 3060Ti Elite provided a smooth and beautiful graphic. Overclocking aided the run-through by about 5% each time.

Since there is no FSR choice all we can provide is a “naked” run-through with the MSI RX 6650 XT.  It was abysmal, to say the least.  There seems to be a disconnect between AMD and Ray Tracing in this game. For completion’s sake, we tried to run this game at 1440p with “ultra” Ray Tracing, it simply was not playable.
