Overclocking the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING OC 12G

Prior to overclocking, we will determine the base GPU clock speed.  Both NVIDIA and AMD have dynamic base speeds, both have a “Boost” speed.  (GPU Boost or Boost Clock, depending on the brand.)  Generally, either brand’s card will exceed the “Boost” dynamically. To determine the “baseline” we record the  GPU frequency in our Cyberpunk 2077 manual run-through. This is a lengthy manual run at Ultra settings. Data is captured for frequency, temperature, voltage, and power using a GPU-Z sensor to log the data.

In the chart above we have the Boost clock frequencies obtained in the default and overclocked testing runs.  The Boost clock of our card in the out-of-box is 2640MHz (noted by the green line) and the NVIDIA reference Boost clock is 2610MHz.

In the benchmark run, the default GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING OC registered a very consistent flat line 2865MHz.  This is an 8.5% increase directly from the factory.  Our overclocked card waffled between 2985MHz and 3000MHz during the bench testing.  A completely unscientific look at the result would guess 60% 2985 and 40% 3000MHz.  It was satisfying to see the 3000 mark reached.  The lift in the overclocked state versus the default state is 13%.  That’s really nice right there.

In overclocking our GIGABYTE RTX 4070 Ti GAMING OC we enlisted the GIGABYTE Control Center software.  The software is a somewhat bulky download that allows a number of functions directed by a home page.  The Control Center allows manipulation of RGB Fusion, motherboard overclocking, fan speeds, as well as graphics card fans and performance.  There is also an update function for all the GIGABYTE branded hardware you might have.  This was fairly simple to use but a fairly large download.  If you have a number of GIGABYTE items, this is handy.  If all you have is a video card, not so much, but you can’t control your RGBs without it.  This seems to be a common practice with manufacturers at this point.

The only part of the GPU “Performance” interface we didn’t like was there is no manual GPU clock frequency adjustment.  To up the clock one must adjust the “Boost” clock tab.  A small number shows up beside the tab which took me a while to figure out represented the GPU clock frequency increase.  Well then, today I learned something. The overclock allowed an increase of 125MHz GPU clock and 1000MHz on the memory side.  This was accomplished by increasing the voltage slightly, the power slider to 119%, and the temperature slider to 88C.  We were able to run the video card at +150MHz and obtain a consistent 3030MHz overclock on the Boost, but the card was not stable in F1 2022.  So we traded down to +125MHz and everyone was happy.  Screen capture is shown above.

Cooling was never an issue for the GIGABYTE RTX 4070 Ti GAMING OC.  We found that the GPU temperature hovered in the low 60sC and even high 50s.  The Hot Point was never above 70C and memory was also a cool 60C.  The fans were left on AUTO for the entire testing.  The highest ramp-up was 77% and while audible on the bench, it was just the sound of quietly moving air.  We did not find it loud or annoying.  Inside a case, this may not be noticeable.

SUMMARY

This review covered the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING OC 12G video card. Overall performance is lacking at 4K. The card seems much more suited for 1440p resolution, where it shines. Although it isn't a great overclocker, the card has exceptional cooling and is very quiet until the fans spin up beyond 75%. Even then the sound is not bothersome. The price/value depends on the buyer's goal. This is a questionable value for 4K but performs very well at 1440p.
