Horizon developer Guerrilla Games is looking to expand the franchise for a long time to come with plans for many more projects in the works. Yesterday Studio Director Jan-Bart van Beek shared during a keynote at Develop Brighton’s event that there at no less than 16 plans in the pipeline for the franchise. He added that “We’re going to be continuing it for a very long while.”
Released in 2017, Horizon Zero Dawn went on to become a big success by selling over 20 million units. Back in May, it was revealed that the franchise has reached over 32.7 million following the release of its sequel Horizon Forbidden West, its only planned DLC (Burning Shores), and the spinoff VR game Call of the Mountain which featured a different main protagonist.
Full Steam Ahead
Obviously not wanting to lose momentum with sales and interest in the franchise, even at the risk of burnout and oversaturation with fans, Horizon developer Guerrilla Games has already announced other projects in the works even before this new reveal. A Netflix series has been said to be in development and will be called Horizon 2074 and it is also known that a follow-up to Horizon Forbidden West is in the works. Additionally, Sony is rumored to be working on a Horizon Zero Dawn remaster for the PS5 which will add updated features and accessibility options.
The Multiplayer project is finally confirmed
For some time there have been numerous tidbits, including online leaks, about a multiplayer game happening and van Beek said (per GamesRadar+), “As people probably already know, we’re also going to be working on a multiplayer game,” adding that this new direction for the studio and franchise would be “a massive shift for the studio, almost on the same level as doing the first Horizon.”
The Studio Director goes on to say that “building this all out to a multiplayer experience is a whole new challenge for the studio,” but the team is excited about it. It is already known that this project is being developed through a partnership with NCsoft.
Full quote per WccfTech:
“As people probably already know, we’re also going to be working on a multiplayer game. It is a massive shift for the studio, almost on the same level as doing the first Horizon. Building this all out to a multiplayer experience is a whole new challenge for the studio.“
As to the remaining projects still in the pipeline for the Horizon franchise, it still remains to be seen what they will turn out to be. Even if we were to include all these aforementioned ones those not yet revealed would still amount to around a dozen or so.
