Gameplay Performance at 4K
The MSI Radeon RX 7900 XTX GAMING TRIO CLASSIC is being tested at 4K (3840×2160) resolution using our new gaming suite. We have added newer games that are quite graphically challenging and offer even more Ray Tracing options plus kept a couple of oldies that are still gold standards for performance. FSR is used for the MSI AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX GAMING TRIO CLASSIC unless the game does not support it. All the graphics settings in this suite were set as high as the game allows or custom combinations. The comparison for our video card review today is the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Founders Edition.
Returnal
Returnal was launched on the PC in February of 2023 and is based on Unreal Engine 4. The game supports real-time ray tracing effects, particle systems, and volumetric rendering. We utilize the graphics preset to set EPIC graphics settings with an unlocked framerate, and everything is enabled. For ray tracing tests we have enabled Ray Traced Shadows and Reflections at EPIC settings. We use the built-in benchmark.
The MSI Radeon RX 7900 XTX GAMING TRIO CLASSIC performs very well in this game. The overclock is about 3% above default which is expected. The performance bests the RTX 4080 by 8% and 18% once upscaled. The gameplay is quite smooth without upscaling though.
Forspoken
Forspoken was released on January 24th, 2023, on the PC and uses the Luminous Engine. The game supports all upscaling methods and Ray Tracing. We are going to customize the settings and enable the highest graphics settings, including Ultra High Texture Memory. We use the built-in benchmark.
The gameplay is once again quite smooth here. There are some dips in FPS but overall the MSI Radeon RX 7900 XTX GAMING TRIO CLASSIC has no issues without upscaling. The comparison performance is essentially a dead heat, even with the added 35% in FSR or DLSS. Overclocking is 3% again.
Callisto Protocol
The Callisto Protocol was released in December of 2022 on the PC and is based on Unreal Engine 4. We run the game in DX12 mode with unlimited framerate, and all graphics settings enabled and at the highest graphics settings. This game supports ray-traced shadows, reflections, and transmissions. We use the built-in benchmark.
Overall gameplay is once again fast and detailed. Upscaling only puts some frosting on the cake. The RTX 4080 does move out slightly ahead here by 3 and 5% but both cards are very fast and smooth. Overclock again is just over 3%.
Chernobylite Enhanced Edition
Chernobylite, based on Unreal Engine 4, was released on the PC in 2021, but the Enhanced Edition update for the game was released in April 2022. The Enhanced Edition provides a visual overhaul of the game with better textures, plus introduces tessellation and ray tracing features. It features raytraced reflections, raytraced translucency, raytraced caustics, and raytraced dynamic diffuse global illumination. It supports upscaling, and we use the highest quality. We use the built-in benchmark.
This game is very Metro Exodus-ish with a sprinkle of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. thrown in. As such it is quite demanding. The results are again very fast and smooth. Although the MSI Radeon RX 7900 XTX GAMING TRIO CLASSIC runs about 15% behind, the gameplay does not suffer here, we are talking 100FPS which is smooth and enjoyable. With upscaling the FPS is blistering, but again the RTX 4080 FE comes out ahead by about 20%.
Dying Light 2
Dying Light 2 was released in February 2022 on the PC. It uses Techland’s C-Engine and supports Ray Tracing for various environmental effects including Ray Traced Soft Shadows, Ray Traced Ambient Occlusion, Ray Traced Global Illumination, and Ray Traced Reflections. It also supports both DLSS and FSR 2.0 upscaling technologies. We are using the game’s built-in benchmark. We use the game patched to 1.11.3Pc
A very demanding game, but very fast results and smooth framerates throughout. The overclocked MSI RX 7900 XTX GAMING TRIO CLASSIC sees a nice 7% uplift versus the default card. Still, the RTX 4080 is 4% better default versus default. DLSS seems to offer a better advantage here, but the upscaled results are impressive. I’ll take a 39% improvement all day.
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December 2020 and uses the REDengine 4. We have the game patched to version 1.63 for our testing. We test using the built-in benchmark. Preset options for Ultra quality are used. Ray Tracing testing uses the “Ultra” presets. This game also supports DLSS and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution FSR 2.1. We test FSR 2.1 Ultra Quality on AMD GPUs.
Playable and detailed framerates out of the box. The MSI Radeon RX 7900 XTX GAMING TRIO CLASSIC runs very well with no help whatsoever. FSR is a nice addition, 21.5%. It seems this game is never much on overclocking, it rarely helps. There is a 3% difference between the competitors, with 12% in upscaling. Very nice result, I’d say, in a very tough game.
