Graphics cards seem to be going on a diet following years of THICCer offerings as MSI introduces its GAMING SLIM family. The GAMING SLIM family will be available in both black or white editions and currently consists of the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING X SLIM 12G, GeForce RTX 4070 GAMING X SLIM 12G, and GeForce RTX 4060 Ti GAMING X SLIM 16G models. MSI has said that it plans to further add to the GAMING SLIM family with RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 down the road.

All of the current offerings in the GAMING SLIM family are listed as being 307 mm (length) x 125 mm (width). The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING X SLIM 12G has a thickness of 51 mm while the GeForce RTX 4070 GAMING X SLIM 12G and GeForce RTX 4060 Ti GAMING X SLIM 16G models are both listed at 46 mm thick. All use MSI’s TRI FROZR 3 cooling solution which incorporates the TORX FAN 5.0 design with three fans combined with 8 core pipes in the heatsink. MSI’s Mystic Light RGB lighting is included and can be controlled via its Mystic Light Sync and Ambient link technologies.

From MSI (news page):

As a leading brand in True Gaming hardware, MSI is excited to introduce the GAMING SLIM Family, a new graphics card series powered by NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 40 series graphics processors. While maintaining the most iconic GAMING elements from the long-standing MSI GAMING series, GAMING SLIM is even thinner and lighter, allowing for flexible system assembly while promising high-performance capabilities. The GAMING SLIM series is available with the GeForce RTX 4090, GeForce RTX 4080, GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, GeForce RTX 4070, and GeForce RTX 4060 Ti graphics processors.

Powered by NVIDIA’s Ada Lovelace architecture, RTX™ 40 Series graphics cards offer unparalleled speed, ushering in a new era of performance, immersive gaming, AI capabilities, and lightning-fast content creation for gamers and creators alike.

Slim design, mighty action

GAMING SLIM is available in both black and white versions, embodying GAMING characteristics through bold lines, clean edges, RGB hues on a sleek appearance, and a ventilation cutout in the backplate. Despite its slim profile, the advanced thermal capability isn’t compromised. The cooling system, driven by MSI’s current-generation thermal solution, TRI FROZR 3, incorporates TORX FAN 5.0 with pairs of three fan blades connected by an outer link. This design forms a rim that directs airflow into the updated thermal module underneath. The system also features a nickel-plated copper baseplate and up to 8 Core Pipes at the heart of the heatsink, effectively dissipating heat. Furthermore, a metal backplate with a flow-through opening enhances heat dissipation and strength. Mystic Light synchronizes exterior illumination with the PC using Mystic Light Sync and Ambient Link technologies.

Appealing option for enthusiasts

Lighter and slimmer than standard GAMING variants, GAMING SLIM is tailored for individuals building gaming setups in tight spaces. This ensures optimal airflow and circulation within the PC case. Furthermore, equipped with top-notch thermal design and advanced features like ray tracing and NVIDIA DLSS, it’s easier to enjoy more lifelike and immersive visuals, improved image quality, and enhanced frame rates. The GAMING SLIM series perfectly suits creative professionals, esports competitors, livestream broadcasters, creators, and more.

Side note: GIGABYTE recently revealed its own smaller RTX 4060 graphics card that was about the size of a banana so it seems this new diet trend for GPUs is spreading.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
