Is the popularity of Minecraft finally starting to dwindle? Not quite, it seems, as the official Minecraft site has confirmed that the sandbox game from Mojang Studios, which originally released over a decade ago in November 2011, has now gone on to sell over 300 million copies. This is a number that would effectively cement Minecraft as the best-selling video game title ever, beating Grand Theft Auto V and Tetris (EA Mobile), its closest competitors, by many, many millions, according to lists that can be found online. Markus Persson, Minecraft’s creator, became a billionaire after Microsoft decided to buy Mojang for $2.5 billion in September 2014.

Top 5 Best-Selling Video Games

  • Minecraft: 300,000,000
  • Grand Theft Auto V: 185,000,000
  • Tetris (EA): 100,000,000
  • Wii Sports: 82,900,000
  • PUBG: Battlegrounds: 75,000,000

It might feel like Minecraft’s blocky biomes have been around since the beginning of time, but Minecraft Live reminded us all that Minecraft is turning 15 next year! Together we’ve been crafting pickaxes (15 million of them!) discovering diamonds (6.7 million!), and slaying 15 million skeletons. Just recently we also crossed 300 million copies sold, a milestone no-one could have dreamed of when we were all building our first dirt houses! I hope there’ll be cake to celebrate our wonderful community, and our soon-to-be fifteen years mining, crafting, and respawning together. Perhaps it’ll even be a creeper cake? Best check back here at Minecraft.net to find out!
