The PS5 Slim and Xbox Series X both feature 1 TB NVMe SSDs, but it seems that there’s more to learn beyond their simple spec sheets.

As brought to attention by Digital Trends, the new PS5, which comes with a larger SSD than the previous model (1 TB vs. 825 GB), ships with 848 GB of storage space, but users can seemingly recover as much as 11.06 GB of space back by deleting ASTRO’s Playroom, a pre-installed game, bringing the total amount of usable space in the console up to 842.2 GB.

The Xbox Series X, on the other hand, is also advertised with 1 TB of storage, but only 802 GB of space is usable, according to the publication, making the new PS5 Slim the clear winner of the “who offers the most space out of the box” contest.

Sony’s new SSD option is also said to be a significant improvement over the previous model, which launched in 2020 with far less usable storage:

The 2020 machine had an 825GB drive, but only around 667GB of that was usable. That means you’re getting almost 200GB of extra space here, which can go a long way depending on what kinds of games you play.

Sony has confirmed that the PS5 Slim and PS5 Slim Digital will be available for purchase this month, although pre-orders for the consoles don’t seem to be up at PS Direct yet.

PlayStation did send out an email today confirming that the PULSE Explore wireless earbuds and PULSE Elite wireless headset are now available for pre-order, however.

These are being released on December 6, 2023 and February 21, 2024, respectively.
