Portrait Displays has announced that the C7 HDR Colorimeter is now available to order through the Portrait Displays store as a standalone unit or in bundles ahead of its shipping date, which is scheduled for the last week of November 2023.

According to a press release that the calibration company shared this week, the C7 HDR is the first and only colorimeter that allows users to measure from 10,000 cd/m² (nits) down to 0.002 cd/m² for the relatively low price of $299, lowering the barrier of entry for AV enthusiasts who are seeking a more accurate HDR picture and display.

Here’s what Portrait Displays had to say about some of the C7 HDR’s other main features, including what appears to be friendly upgrades:

The C7 HDR is equipped with virtually unlimited custom Spectral Matrix Corrections (SMCs), a technology that allows for optimization against a wide range of display technologies. This bespoke approach to optimization enables the C7 HDR to deliver unparalleled accuracy compared to other brands, which typically offer only general or basic calibration profiles.

The revolutionary feature of field upgradability ensures that this colorimeter can be updated for newer technologies without needing factory returns. The generous onboard memory guarantees long-term usability as technologies evolve, so customers can say goodbye to frequent hardware replacements.

Portrait Displays goes on to confirm that the colorimeter can be used to calibrate every display type on the market, including Micro-LED, although those who can afford one could probably just hire a professional calibrator instead.

Connectivity also includes USB-C, and there’s also support for tons of memory slots:

The compatibility of the C7 HDR with all display types, including QD OLED, WRGB OLED, RGB OLED, Mini-LED, and Micro-LED, broadens its application across consumer electronics and professional content creation environments. With an impressive exposure ranging from 256ms to 16 seconds, this device comes with a detachable cable, allowing interchangeable connections between USB-C to USB-A or USB-C to USB-C. This user-centric design enhances customization and reduces costly repairs.

The inclusion of hundreds of available memory slots in the C7 HDR allows accommodation of current and future display devices, expertly managed via Calman, the most widely used color calibration software. These features, paired with the user-friendly design, field upgrade capabilities, and flexible USB-C interface, make this colorimeter an indispensable tool.

There are currently a few C7 HDR bundles listed on the Portrait Display store, including Home LG & C7 HDR, a set that pairs the colorimeter with Calman’s Home for LG software.

Calman Home for LG is probably one of the main reasons why LG OLED TVs remain recommended over the typical OLED monitor, as the software makes it very easy for anyone to get a good calibration of their supported display without hiring a professional.

Calman has three tutorial videos that show how easy it is to calibrate not only SDR, but also HDR and Dolby Vision on an LG OLED display, with the only additional hardware requirements being a laptop.

The C7 HDR is only compatible with Calman calibration software version 5.14 R5 and future software releases, which are sold separately, Portrait Displays noted on its website.
