Will Avatar 3 be able to break 2 billion like the previous films? Fans should be able to find out in two years, as director James Cameron has confirmed that the third film in his blockbuster franchise is on track for a Christmas 2025 release.

Cameron shared the news during a recent interview with 1News, where he revealed that Avatar 3 is in a “very hectic two years of post-production right now” and how he plans to shoot all of his future films in New Zealand:

Per coverage from Variety, Avatar 3 was originally supposed to release next year, but Disney decided to shake up the schedule to an extent where the final Avatar film won’t premiere until the next decade:

The studio, which acquired the franchise after its merger with Fox, had originally planned to release Cameron’s additional “Avatar” sequels two years apart from one another, with the third movie arriving in 2024. But now “Avatar 3” is opening on Dec. 19, 2025; “Avatar 4” on Dec. 21, 2029; and “Avatar 5” on Dec. 19, 2031. Based on this timeline, the final “Avatar” movie will premiere 22 years after the original 2009 blockbuster.

According to a feature that Empire shared in March, Avatar 3 is set to introduce a new group of antagonistic Na’vi called the Ash People, which has been described as “an aggressive, volcanic race.”

Cameron will be 77 when the last Avatar film comes out, while Zoe Zaldana, who was 27 when she shot the first Avatar, will be 53.
