Can Godzilla outrun King Kong? Fans will seemingly be getting the answer to that in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the new Monsterverse movie that received its first official trailer yesterday courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures.

Here’s a description of the new movie from Legendary Pictures and Adam Wingard, who returned to the director’s chair following the success of 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, which released during the pandemic but apparently did well enough to warrant a sequel:

The epic battle continues! Legendary Pictures’ cinematic Monsterverse follows up the explosive showdown of “Godzilla vs. Kong” with an all-new adventure that pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own. “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

According to the trailer, Godzilla and King Kong will be teaming up in the film to beat up Skar King, a giant orangutan, and it looks like there’s a mini-Kong, too:

And here’s what Godzilla and King Kong fans have had to say about the trailer following its release, with many making fun of Adam Wingard’s creative decisions:

Although some have noted that this isn’t a new thing for Godzilla:

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is scheduled for release in theaters in 2024, but those who want more Godzilla now can check out Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the new streaming series on Apple that stars Kurt Russell.

Godzilla Minus One, a new Godzilla film from Japan, also released this year to rave reviews, earning a 98% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.
