Overclocking MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM 12G

To overclock the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM 12G video card we are going to use MSI Afterburner, the latest version, which worked flawlessly and even let us increase Voltage. This led us to overclock the video card in two different scenarios, one increasing the Voltage as high as possible and also increasing fan speed, and the other not touching the Voltage and leaving fans on Automatic.

We wanted to test out the viability of the cooling solution on the new, slimmer, and smaller MSI RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM and see if it would hold overclocking back in any way. We also wanted to find out if it can handle overclocking on automatic fans, and if it can handle overvolving the GPU.

Highest Overclock Pushing Voltage

When we open up MSI Afterburner on the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM 12G video card we found that we can increase the Power Limit by 7% from 100% to 107%. This is a rather small power increase, but it is just enough to allow us to achieve an almost 3GHz clock speed, especially since we can also increase the Voltage by +100 on this video card as you can see above. In the above screenshot, we are pushing the video card as hard as we can with Voltage and have also set the fans manually to 50%, yes just 50% fan speeds.

With those settings applied above, we were able to increase the Core Clock up +230 and the Memory Clock +1000 from 21GHz to 23GHz. This is a very good overclock, and we will see what those settings look like on a graph, but first let’s also see what we got out of the video card when we did not increase Voltage and kept the fans on Automatic control.

Highest Overclock with NO Voltage Adjustment

In the above screenshot, you can see what settings we found we could hit when we did not increase the Core Voltage at all. We still managed to push about +220 on the Core Clock, and the same memory clock of 23GHz. Now, because the Voltage is not increased, the Boost will be lower, and so now to see how all this translates to frequency, let’s look at the overclocked GPU frequency graph below.

Overclocked GPU Frequency Compared

MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM 12G Overclock GPU Frequency Comparison Graph

By default, without touching anything, the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM 12G exceeds the default NVIDIA boost clock of 2610MHz by delivering a solid 2700MHz out-of-the-box. This is with no overclocking at all, the slimmer, smaller nature is not holding back the Boost clock at all here. It is boosting by 3.4% without even doing anything, so we are getting excellent clock speed just by itself.

Now, looking at the blue line we have the video card overclocked with NO voltage applied and default automatic fan speeds. Here you can see that at +220 Core Frequency, we are boosting now up to 2910MHz very consistently. From the default 2700MHz that is a smooth 8% overclock frequency without even applying Voltage. The overclock is extremely consistent as well, so both the default and overclock remain stable and consistent, and that is with automatic fan speed as well.

We did not want to stop there of course, we cranked up the video card to +100 Voltage and cranked the fans up to 50% fan speed, which was still quiet. We were able to squeeze out a bit more on the frequency and got very close to 3GHz. Our final overclock with Voltage applied was 2970MHz and peaking at 2985MHz. Therefore, the total overclock from default is a 10% GPU frequency overclock. Also, consider memory is overclocked from 21GHz to 23GHz as well in these overclock results.

Our final overclock therefore that we used in our testing is 2970MHz/23GHz (GPU/Mem).

SUMMARY

We reviewed the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM 12G Video Card, a new thinner, smaller configuration of the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING TRIO. This one is able to maintain its performance, and isn't constrained by the smaller build, and provides GPU boost performance and overclocking headroom as well. The cooler works really well, and the GPU is very efficient. Its gaming performance trails the Radeon RX 7900 XT, and pricing will be an important factor. The non-X variant should be less money than the overclocked model, and still has the ability to overclock very well.
