Conclusion

Today’s review was slimming, err… The MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM 12G video card is a newer, slimmer, leaner, and smaller GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GPU-based video card. MSI has taken its famous GAMING TRIO line and squeezed it a bit into a newer GAMING SLIM line with this GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM. MSI offers two color options and an X (factory overclocked) and a non-X version, which we reviewed today. The MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM packs all the punch of the GAMING TRIO but allows easier installation into smaller builds.

When evaluating the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM, we wanted to test to make sure the smaller, leaner build of this video card wasn’t going to hold back the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. NVIDIA provides a default boost clock of 2610MHz. The MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM runs at this default boost clock, and typically video cards are able to boost above that frequency if thermals, power delivery, and power headroom are available.

Well, the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM is able to provide all of that, and with this cooler, power delivery, and power headroom the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM boosted to 2700MHz out-of-the-box. In addition, it did it at a very consistent frequency without fluctuation. This means that this new thinner profile is not at all holding the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti back, in fact, it’s allowing it to flourish and run as fast as possible.

In addition, we found that the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM had incredible overclocking headroom. Even without touching Voltage (which we could do BTW), we were able to push it over 2900MHz overclocked with the fans on automatic! We could even push the memory from 21GHz to 23GHz with that GPU frequency bump, and Afterburner let us up the power target by 7%.

But if we really wanted to go for it, we could. We could increase Voltage by +100 and push the clock speed even higher up to 2970MHz topping out at 2985MHz. While we pushed the fan speed a bit, (and by bit we mean a small 10% bump), you probably could leave it on automatic and it’d be fine. This small bump in fan speed did not create a loud experience at all. Overall performance improvement from overclocking was between 7-9% in games.

Final Points

The MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM is a solid entry in MSI’s lineup. We really like the idea of small’ifying (our word), video cards. Taking a performant video card build or design, and finding ways to compact it down in size in all dimensions, length, width, height, and slot size is a welcomed change and a welcomed goal.

MSI managed to make a smaller GeForce RTX 4070 Ti configuration that doesn’t hurt performance and actually worked really well when overclocked. There is still potential and headroom out of this design, which is great for hardware enthusiasts. In addition, MSI is also providing two color options with an all-white variant or its traditional colors with both a factory overclocked and stock clock model.

We hope to see more from MSI’s GAMING SLIM line, and we hope this trend continues into this year as well. If you are looking for a new, slimmer, GeForce RTX 4070 Ti give the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM 12G a look.

SUMMARY

We reviewed the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING SLIM 12G Video Card, a new thinner, smaller configuration of the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING TRIO. This one is able to maintain its performance, and isn't constrained by the smaller build, and provides GPU boost performance and overclocking headroom as well. The cooler works really well, and the GPU is very efficient. Its gaming performance trails the Radeon RX 7900 XT, and pricing will be an important factor. The non-X variant should be less money than the overclocked model, and still has the ability to overclock very well.
