The first footage for Borderlands has arrived, offering an early look at what Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and other stars will look like in Eli Roth’s live-action adaptation of Gearbox’s looter shooter franchise. Borderlands, which has a full trailer reveal set for tomorrow, is coming to theaters on August 9, 2024.

Borderlands stars:

  • Cate Blanchett as Lilith
  • Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina
  • Jack Black as the voice of Claptrap
  • Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis
  • Kevin Hart as Roland
  • Florian Munteanu as Krieg
  • Gina Gershon as Moxxi

The teaser-of-a-teaser:

Roth explaining how Blanchett signed on because she’d have a good amount of freedom in the role:

  • “I think with me, she has permission to go a little bit weird and a little bit insane because it’s like, ‘Well, it’s Eli.”
  • “It’s just like, ‘Let’s go have fun.’ But she’s obviously very serious about her character.”

As for why Curtis and Black is involved:

  • For Curtis, the decision to join the cast was largely spurred by her gamer daughter, who is a fan of the Borderlands franchise, saying “‘Mom, you have to do this movie,’” as [Randy] Pitchford recalled.
  • In Black’s case, the roots run even deeper. Back in 2012, he brought his son to E3 when Borderlands 2 was first being teased. Black asked Pitchford for a demo of the game, and the Gearbox founder told him that he would have to play Claptrap if a film adaptation of the franchise were ever to be made. The Nacho Libre star, of course, readily agreed.

Critics are saying:

  • “From the producers of Uncharted, SpiderMan and Venom. Yeah this movie is going to be great.”
  • “I find the games to be fun and decent shooters but their comedy is really unfunny and try-hard.”
  • “Tannis and lilith seemed to have aged 20 years and roland has shrunk 1ft”
  • “You can hear Cate Blanchett’s age in her voice.”

Synopsis:

Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous treasure hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. She forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Hart), once a highly respected soldier, but now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis (Curtis), the scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Black), a persistently wiseass robot.

These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.
