Power and Temperature

To test the power and temperature we perform a manual run-through in Cyberpunk 2077 at “Ultra” settings for real-world in-game data. We use GPU-Z sensor data to record the results. We report on the GPU-Z sensor data for “Board Power” and “GPU Chip Power” when available for our Wattage data. For temperature data, we report the GPU (Edge Temp of the GPU or Package Temp) as well as Hot Spot (Junction Temperature) when available for our temperature data.

Power Draw Graph

The TDP of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE is quoted by AMD at around 260W. The PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE, which has a factory overclock and power, comes in at 294W of board power. That means it pulls 49% more power than the GeForce RTX 4070 and 32% more power than the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER. It’s still under the Radeon RX 7900 XT, but not too far away in power draw. When we overclock it though, it does exceed the Radeon RX 7900 XT’s power draw by a fair amount. Overclocking increased power draw by 14%, but our overclocking performance result was at max 7%.

GPU Temperature Graph

Where the PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE shines is in the GPU and Hot Spot temperatures. The custom cooler on this video card is phenomenal. The PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE ran the coolest, at just 60c, beating even the more efficient RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 SUPER. When overclocked, we left the fans on automatic, and they spun up a little faster on their own and kept the temps under 60c, which is amazing, cause it was still quiet.

GPU Hot Spot Temperature Graph

The Hot Spot temperatures are really impressive to us, It’s Hella Cool, literally. The Hot Spot temps are the coolest on this chart at 76c, again beating the more efficient GPUs. PowerColor has really done a great job with the heatsink/fan, and the mounting and thermal paste solution to keep the Hot Spot temps this cool.

On the left below is the default speeds, and on the right is the overclocked speeds. You can see that the fans automatically increased to 53% from the default of 42% and we also see the Voltage go up a bit when it was overclocked, all automatically. This accounts for the extra power draw.

SUMMARY

PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB GDDR6 video card review - It has really great cooling in this visually pleasing build. It offers competitive performance with the competition, at this price point, delivering a great 1440p gameplay experience, and with FSR upscaling Ray Tracing and 4K are viable. With 16GB of VRAM, it's geared for gaming this year and beyond. Though it demands more power, its price value is strong sitting in-between the Radeon RX 7900 XT and Radeon RX 7800 XT.
