Introduction

AMD recently made the Radeon RX 7900 GRE a global release, and add-in-board partners (AIBs) are stepping up to the plate, offering unique custom options with factory overclocks. Among those is the new PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE video card, strap-in for this Radeon RX 7900 GRE review.

As a brief introduction, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE started as a China-only video card, and as of February 27th, 2024, AMD is making it globally available, which means you can buy it right here in the US. In addition, AMD has lowered the official suggested pricing or SEP to $549 for the Radeon RX 7900 GRE. This is a partner-driven launch, however, so you won’t find made-by-AMD video cards for this one, and the PowerColor Hellhound AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB GDDR6 (RX 7900 GRE 16G-L/OC) is a top-end SKU from PowerColor for $579 online.

If you aren’t familiar with the specifications of the Radeon RX 7900 GRE, you can check out the specs in our launch review here. In summary, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE is based on the Navi 31 die (same as the Radeon RX 7900 XT and XTX), so it is a cut-down Radeon RX 7900 XT. It has 4 fewer Compute Units and Ray Accelerators, and 256 fewer Stream Processors. It also has a reduction in game clock down to 1880MHz and a boost clock up to 2245MHz.

The biggest difference is the memory subsystem, it shares the same memory subsystem as the Radeon RX 7800 XT with a 256-bit memory bus with 18Gbps of VRAM making slightly less bandwidth compared to the higher memory-clocked Radeon RX 7800 XT. It does, however, retain the full 16GB of VRAM capacity, and the total board power is rated at 260W.

In PowerColor’s Radeon RX 7900 GRE lineup, there are three models, the Red Devil, the Hellhound, and the Fighter. Each has its own design language and look, but all have a triple-fan design, with varying factory overclocks and features. Interestingly, even the lowest-cost card, the Fighter, has a factory overclock, all three models have a factory overclock. The Hellhound model we are reviewing today sits right in the middle on factory overclock, which is faster than the Fighter, but slightly less clock speed than the Red Devil.

The PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE has a factory overclock of 2013MHz for the game clock and 2366MHz for the boost clock. This is a 7% boost to the game clock from the reference specs and a 5% boost to the boost clock compared to the reference spec. The Red Devil version, by comparison, has a 2% higher clock than the Hellhound. The Hellhound, however, is about 4% higher than the Fighter model.

The PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE measures (322mm*134mm*50mm) or 12.6″ inches in length, 5.2″ in width, and 1.9″ in height. It has 1x HDMI 2.1, and 3x DisplayPort 2.1 display outputs on board. PowerColor recommends a 750W PSU and there are two 8-pin PCI-Express power connectors on board.

The PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE features a triple-fan ringed-fan solution, with the two outer fans measuring 100m and the middle fan being 90mm. The fans are dual ball bearings and has intelligent fan control where they will shut off below 50c. The 9-blade ring-fans help with air pressure and help reduce temperatures. The middle fan also spins in reverse, the opposite direction of the outer two, in order to reduce turbulence with neighboring fans when drawing in air. There is also an air-passthrough at the rear of the heatsink to allow air to pass completely through.

The heatsink has a copper plate making direct contact with the GPU while covering VRAM with 5×6 nickel-plated copper heatpipes. It is built with 15 phase (9+2+1+2+1) VRM design as well as an additional 2+1 phase specifically designated for the VRAM and DrMOS with iMON real-time digital monitoring. The video card also has a metal reinforced backplate and high quality 14-Layer PCB design. It also has a DUAL BIOS with a switch, for OC or quiet mode. The OC BIOS increases fan RPM while the Silent BIOS focuses on lower noise with a milder fan speed.

The PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE features a unique LED color, amethyst purple. In fact, there is an LED switch on the video card that lets you switch between the ice blue color or the new unique amethyst color, or you can turn off the LEDs completely.

SUMMARY

PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB GDDR6 video card review - It has really great cooling in this visually pleasing build. It offers competitive performance with the competition, at this price point, delivering a great 1440p gameplay experience, and with FSR upscaling Ray Tracing and 4K are viable. With 16GB of VRAM, it's geared for gaming this year and beyond. Though it demands more power, its price value is strong sitting in-between the Radeon RX 7900 XT and Radeon RX 7800 XT.
