KB5035853, a new update that Microsoft rolled out for Windows 11 on March 12, hasn’t been great for ASUS ROG Ally users in that it can result in major performance issues for the handheld machine—or, more specifically, its AMD-powered iGPU—according to numerous complaints that have surfaced online since its release. “Yeah basically windows update fudged the driver and it reverted to the generic GPU driver,” one user explained, and while this problem hasn’t been confirmed by Microsoft yet, there appear to be a few solutions for the issue already (aside from merely uninstalling the update), such as disabling the in-game overlay.

Complaints from affected users:

  • “I have an Asus Rog Ally and an AMD-powered laptop. Both of them stutter and games run at 60 fps. Stats via MSI afterburner show 60 fps, but it is sluggish and feels like they run at 15 fps.”
  • “I’m experiencing some bad performance on Baldur’s Gate 3. Even when playing everything on Low, 900p and 20W, it doesn’t go any higher than 40fps and suddenly drops down to less than 20fps and lots of stuttering. When it happens, I always notice the GPU with 800mHz…”
  • “…playing WoW was absolutely seamless, and now is completely choppy with 30-40FPS and unstable/unplayable.”
  • “Mine did some updates last night, and is super borked now. Basically nothing runs properly anymore, unless it runs in 10w potato mode. The higher power profiles are all messed up.”
  • “Yep latest windows update completely breaks the ally.”

Affected users can try disabling the in-game overlay:

  • Open the AMD Adrenaline app
  • Click on the Settings icon, go to Preferences
  • Disable the in-game overlay toggle, then close the app
  • Restart the ROG Ally

Another potential solution comes by way of resetting the AMD Adrenaline app:

  • Search AMD in the Start menu, then click on Advanced options
  • Navigate to the Reset section
  • Click on the Repair button, and then check if the games work fine or not
  • If there’s stuttering, revisit the Advanced options page and click Reset
  • Launch AMD Adrenalin and create a new profile.
