AMD Is Reportedly Targeting Clock Speeds Upwards of 3.4 GHz for RDNA 5, Hinting at a Potential 14% Uptick over Radeon RX 9070XT

A new rumor suggests that AMD is targeting higher clock rates for its RDNA 5 graphics and is sparking speculation regarding performance gains over its last flagship discrete GPU. AMD has yet to officially say anything regarding RDNA 5 dGPU specifications, but there’s always hope something is on the way, especially as we’re getting closer to CES 27. It could easily be said that 2026 was the year consumers were ghosted by manufacturers, and while AMD did technically launch new(ish) graphics cards in the form of the RX 9070 GRE, which made its global launch in 2026 following a limited release in 2025, and then the RX 9050, which is more of an OEM oddity than anything most consumers are likely to seek out, there wasn’t anything to really be concerned with. Meanwhile, Intel all but completely bowed out of the consumer dGPU market by only launching a commercial-grade product in the form of the Arc B770 Pro, but then NVIDIA did not release anything at all for consumers this year.

All that being said, it’s well known that AMD and NVIDIA are currently focused on supporting data centers and enterprises with their latest GPU tech, and RDNA 5 and Rubin are expected to trickle down to consumers at some point, but then will have to find a way to navigate pricing around the memory crisis. Sadly, this may not happen until after 2027, but we can always hope for sooner rather than later. No matter, because rumors wait for no one, and well-known leaker Kepler_L2 has dropped another, stating that AMD is targeting between 3.1 GHz and 3.4 GHz for RDNA 5. Some of the guesswork here is that we do not know if this applies to AMD RDNA 5 APU or discrete graphics, but it is likely to be the latter. AMD’s current flagship GPU, the Radeon RX 9070 XT, has a base clock at 2.97 GHz and a boost of 3.1 GHz. Now, if AMD achieves 3.4 GHz for a new top-tier card, that could be upwards of a 14% clock increase. However, we do not yet know what new hardware- and software-based features will also be included for RDNA 5, so other performance gains could easily be tied to new features as well.
