This summer’s Xbox Showcase is set to take place in the middle of what is becoming a packed extended weekend of game industry events. In the spirit of the phrase “nature abhors a vacuum”, multiple gaming events have been scheduled within days of each other in the absence of E3. The Summer Game Fest 2024 kicks things off on Friday, June 7, followed by Xbox Showcase on June 9, and with Ubisoft’s “UbiForward” event on Monday, June 10. For those wondering, Sony is rumored to hold its PlayStation State of Play sometime in May. Presently there’s no word on if Nintendo is planning any events of its own for this summer but that is a possibility given the amount of recent rumors regarding the Switch 2, although it could also make some announcements at the Summer Game Fest 2024.

Xbox Showcase details:

The Verge’s Tom Warren has confirmed announcements for a new Gears of War Game (aka Gears 6) and the next Call of Duty game. It’s been four years since the last main installment in the Gears of War franchise and given the mostly favorable reviews for Gears 5 a follow-up could do well. The next Call of Duty, which is reported to feature a Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War campaign with linear missions, and will continue to incorporate the open-world design used in Modern Warfare III. The main campaign is being developed by Raven Software with the multiplayer and zombie missions to be done by Treyarch Games.

Other game announcements said to be happening during this year’s Xbox showcase include the official release dates for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and Avowed. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is being developed by MachineGames and published by Bethesda Softworks. Asobo is once again, following its award-winning last entry in the franchise, developing Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 which will be published by Xbox Game Studios. Avowed is an upcoming first person action RPG set in Eora (Pillars of Eternity) and is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment and also getting published by Xbox Game Studios.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
