Bug reports for the Fallout 4 next-gen update continue to pop up online and one of them appears to be that the Quality mode on Xbox is nonfunctional. Yesterday’s update seemed to at least sound good on paper but after the 14 GB patch rolled out bug reports began rolling in. This one in particular just seems to mean that Xbox Series X|S owners are stuck at 60 FPS due to the Performance remaining on even when players try to switch to Quality mode. Digital Foundry’s Thomas Morgan posted on social media (via VGC) confirming the nonfunctioning setting.

“Fallout 4 fans on next gen – I can confirm that only the 60fps ‘performance mode’ works right now,” said Morgan who added, “Disabling the performance mode seemingly does nothing. It stays at 60fps and the res bound stays the same”.

More bugs continue to be discovered

Now while this bug seems to only affect Xbox users it is at least a minor one that simply restricts plays from the highest image quality but does add to the growing lists of those being reported by PlayStation, Steam Deck, and PC players. From those also already reported yesterday to more being posted today regarding missing textures, it looks like Bethesda still has some work to do with the Fallout 4 next-gen update.

Looks like somebody forgot to load some textures, including the entire Rapid Pipe Grenade Launcher Rifle

One of the more hilarious moments with the missing texture issues comes from Reddit user CSSJAZZ (via IGN) where we can see the loyal companion Dogmeat diving into oblivion due to a nonexistent surface boundary.

PC users may have had the worst experience with the next-gen update. From broken mods to distorted GUI in ultra-widescreen, a lack of modern updates increased crashing, and more, PC players may want to either prevent or uninstall the update. This is at least until Bethesda fixes it a bit more and the modding community can update their own mods to be compatible with it. Steam Deck users are also reporting the game may not even launch now and if it does there could be missing menu settings or run at lower performance than before.

Fallout 4 update seems to break the game on the deck. Unable to launch even after trying multiple proton versions.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
