Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a new installment of the historical action-adventure video game series from Ubisoft that was supposed to transport players to Feudal Japan this November, will no longer be released that month, according to a new message from Marc-Alexis Cote (Vice President Executive Producer of the Assassin’s Creed brand) that explains how the game has been delayed to February 14, 2025. The new game, which critics say isn’t an entirely accurate portrayal of Japan, will also be available on Steam at launch.

Côté writes:

  • “Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a dream project for us; finally bringing the series to Feudal Japan with many features developed with our community in mind, such as parkour or the renewed stealth, brought by new technology, all set in a beautiful and immersive world.”
  • “This is an ambitious addition to the franchise, a rich experience that can be lived through the eyes of two unique protagonists – but we realize we need more time to polish and refine the experience, pushing further some of our key features.”
  • “As such, we’ve made the decision to postpone the release date to February 14, 2025. The game will release on a broad range of platforms, including Steam at launch.”
  • “Additionally, preorders will be refunded and all future preorders will be granted the first expansion for free.”
  • “We understand this decision will come as disappointing news, especially to those who’ve been waiting patiently for an Assassin’s Creed game inspired by Feudal Japan, but we sincerely believe this is in the best interest of the game, and ultimately your experience as a player.”
  • “Rest assured we are looking forward to the moment you will embark on a memorable adventure with Naoe and Yasuke. Until then, we thank you for your ongoing support.”

The original word from Côté:

A description for the $129.99 Ultimate Edition reads:

Play the game up to three days early with the Ultimate Edition, which includes the base game, the season pass, and the Ultimate Pack. Pre-order now to get a bonus quest, Thrown to the Dogs.

I fixed that for you.

What's interesting is that Ubisoft has never cared about quality or a polished day one experience. Day one release on Steam is really just an attempt to get more people to buy the game as a lot of people hate Ubisoft's trash Ubiconnect (or whatever its called) launcher.

I saw the headline and immediately thought -- oh wth are they brining Poland into a Feudal Japan game for?

I wonder if they're toning down whatever content it was that was firing up the Japanese community. I'm not sure they can afford another underperforming release.

That would require massive replacement of buildings and game assets as well as changing the main protagonist. They also need to switch out all the flags which were used without permission of that family and buy up all those statues of the broken gate etc. and put them in a landfill or melt them down, etc.

Then the Japanese might be happy. The game is too far gone to be a success. Ubisoft can't retool it completely in five months time. They are pulling it back because Outlaws caught a lot more backlash for its bugs and other issues than they expected. I also think that they don't want to give the investors who want heads to roll to have anymore ammunition this year.

But, because the people who make narrative decisions like this don't think they are doing anything wrong, Ubisoft probably believes that bugs are the only reason why Outlaws didn't do well and why Shadows needs more time in the oven. Truth is, what's wrong with it has become intrinsic to the game at this point and they'd have to scrap a lot of it to actually make a good game out of this shit.
