An AMD RX 9070 XT with 32 GB of memory is rumored to be on the table as a likely attempt to sway customers eyeing the NVIDIA RTX 5090. It’s only a matter of weeks until the expected launch of AMD’s RDNA4 graphics cards which have already been confirmed to feature 16 GB of VRAM. This amount of memory is usually considered more than adequate for gaming at 1440p and for many games can suffice at 4K. However, from video and photo editing projects to AI tasks the sky is the limit for PC users looking beyond gaming for their graphics card purchases. So far NVIDIA has led the pack with its x90, Ti, and non-Ti GPUs previously featuring 24 GB VRAM, beginning with the RTX 30 series, and was then upped to a staggering 48 GB GDDR7 on the latest RTX 5090 flagship, although AMD has offered 24 GB with its previous RX 7900 series flagship cards.
However, while the NVIDIA RTX 5090 may look like a dream for both productivity and gaming obtaining one may be as elusive as getting a good night’s sleep thanks to its pricing and limited availability. This presents an interesting product gap for which AMD could be in the perfect position to exploit. It’s already been said that the AMD RX 9070 XT will be priced “aggressively”, possibly at $599, to compete with NVIDIA and Intel in the mid-range GPU segment. If true, AMD could easily offer a 32 GB variant and as long as it’s offered for a price consumers are willing to pay, could easily compete with the NVIDIA flagship when it comes to those more interested in productivity than 4K gaming.
32 GB rumor to semi-official
It’s a growing trail of leads indicating the reality of an AMD RX 9070 XT 32 GB model. The first rumor started with Chiphell, an outlet that has become somewhat standard for early AMD leaks lately, and also reported on by Notebookcheck. That leak began by stating that AMD is planning on a new version with larger memory but that final specifications had not yet been decided upon other than 32 GB, and that it would launched this year and likely on a 256-bit bus but perhaps 512-bit.R More replies added that the new card would not be a professional model, aka Radeon Pro series, but indeed a 9070 gaming model. VideoCardz has conveniently compiled those aforementioned posts into a single image below.
Budget cards with more memory are not new
The leaker has since provided additional replies defending AMD’s strategy to offer a mid-range card having so much memory by saying that it’s for “deepseek and other AI”, “mainly for AI” and that its “price is much higher, and it will be released at the end of Q2”. One thing that seems certain is regardless of ups and downs of AI progress memory manufacturers will continue to see high demand from GPU manufacturers.
Assuming this model does launch it will still not be the first time a mid-range gaming GPU has been paired in a seemingly top-heavy configuration as NVIDIA made a similar move with its RTX 3060 12 GB model (1, 2) in 2021. This was a card that was priced at $329 but whose memory was rarely used to its fullest at 1080p, where it most excelled, and while graphics-intensive AAA games at 1440p rarely benefitted from before GPU performance fell below 60 FPS. AMD countered with its RX 6750 XT also with 12 GB VRAM, aimed to compete with the RTX 3070 at $549 in 2022.
Since then those wanting more memory often had to seek higher priced cards from both companies featuring either 16 GB or 24 GB but 2025 looks to be the year consumers will see more competitive options. Intel already shook things up with its B580 graphics card featuring 12 GB VRAM at $249, something AMD and NVIDIA are assuredly keeping an eye on as budget-minded consumers seek out more affordable GPUs.
