Gears of War fans get ready because it may not be too much longer until the next game arrives in 2026, so prepare for Emergence Day. Gears of War: E-Day has been built using Unreal Engine 5, and according to a report from 2024, it will have 100 times more environment and character details than Gears 5, use raytracing for lighting, shadows, and reflections, plus next-gen destruction, gore, and animations. The Coalition studio head, Mike Crump, shared the following with Xbox Wire regarding the upcoming game.

“Next year marks the 20th anniversary of Gears of War, and we can’t think of a bigger way to celebrate than with the release of Gears of War: E-Day. This is our most ambitious game yet, entirely built from scratch in Unreal Engine 5 to feel like Gears and play like new. This is a return to our roots as Marcus & Dom face the Locust for the first time ever. It’s the best place to jump into the Gears universe and we can’t wait to share more next year.”

– Mike Crump, The Coalition Studio Head

Gears of War: E-Day is set 14 years before Gears of War and features young versions of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago. The story begins with the two heroes returning home as the Locust Horde emerges from their subterranean dwellings to wreak havoc upon humanity.

While an exact date has not yet been set, Xbox Game Studios has formally announced it will launch in 2026, which was also confirmed by The Coalition. Microsoft is planning a developer direct event in January, where it’s possible that more information for the upcoming prequel will be shared.

Mike Crump also added the following after being asked how it feels to see a game launch following its time in development.

“It’s been so cool to see players come together without barriers for the first time in Gears’ almost 20-year history. Seeing our community fight side by side whether through the campaign story or in Versus reaffirms and reminds us why we make Gears: because gaming brings us together.”

I would preorder that game. No joke.

Because somehow it would be the best game any company has ever put out, ever.

This is what happens when every console gamer doesn't own all the consoles :D

PC gamers on the other hand just smile and nod and wait...

I mean really... as a PC gamer I want Xbox to win the console wars... because their games come to PC where they can perform better and rake in even more money, and considering the development cycles are near identical...

The only game I really wanted form Sony isn't even likely to ever get made now and that would've been the final Horizon game. Other than that, I got the last 2 Spider-Man games last BF and have yet to play them but will at some point because I'm into that stuff. Never got ragnarok but interested and that's pretty much it. So far and wide, not really worried about Sony keeping to itself.

Meanwhile I'm curious about Clockwork Revolution and halfway through what is likely around my 10th run with The Great Circle and still need to finish Oblivion Remastered. There's also always a chance I might get back to Starfield since they keep adding stuff and I got the season pass whatever.

I am an OG Gears head. Pre-ordered and played co-op day 1. I had a great time in all but 4. I don't know what they were thinking with that one. 5 I dig the combat, but dislike the story in 4 and 5. I hope they have permanently abandoned the Disney princess storyline. This prequel is supposed to get back to the more horror driven grim dark of the first game. If they do this right, it will pleasantly surprise me. Hopefully the success of Space Marine 2 has shown them who their core audience is, and this game will be for us.

Okay, I took the time to watch the game play and I'm sold. The story and setting seems like old school Gears. Tai was a great reveal. Hopefully they have worked some magic to make whatever iterations of UE5 used, not suck. My gut tells me some of the quick clips of game play were on Series S. A few looked like settings, resolution, and FPS were significanly lower than others.

Cliffy B does not like that the locusts are no longer bullet sponges, but that is traditionally fixed by choosing hardcore or insane. If not, no big deal. As the cover system looks to be tweaked for moving and pushing more. Being able to dome grubs quickly will facilitate it. 5 impressed me with how destructible cover combined with layered enemy classes would force you to relocate and be more aggressive on harder difficulty.

Another popular gaming franchise I've never played. lol

Don't think I'm missing anything either.

Then you are not. ;) Different stokes and all that.

I put crazy hours into the first 3 games, especially co-op and MP. It was very much a you had to be there thing.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
