Power & Temperature Testing

On this page, we are going to test the power draw on the CPUs, testing multi-core performance in Cinbench 2026 running for 15 minutes. We are also going to test the CPU package temperature using the same method.

CPU Power Graph

The TDP of the AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D remains the same as the Ryzen 7 9800X3D at 120W. In our testing, the actual peak package power reported by HWiNFO64 in the multi-core benchmark was around 141W-145W for both CPUs. Technically, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D was a little lower by 2%. It is good to see that it does not consume more power than the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, considering it is clocked 400MHz faster. This is much less than the Ryzen 9 9950X3D by 29%, and a massive amount less than the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K at 48%. The Ryzen 7 9850X3D does consume more power than the lower-powered Ryzen 7 9700X by 61%.

CPU Temperature Graph

The AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D had a package temperature of 86.2 Celsius at max, which is right in-line with the temperature of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. It is good to see that the Ryzen 7 9850X3D did not run hotter than the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, despite it having a 400MHz clock speed increase. This runs warmer than the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 7 9700X, but cooler than the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K slightly.

CPU Clock Speed Comparison

Multi-Core

We wanted to compare the clock speeds between the Ryzen 7 9850X3D and Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Therefore, above the left screenshot is of the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, and the right screenshot is of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Both CPUs are running the Cinebench 2026 Multi-Core benchmark. We can see that the maximum clock speed increases from around 5.18-5.2GHz up to 5.4-5.585GHz on the new Ryzen 7 9850X3D running all-cores.

Single-Core

In the two screenshots above, we are now looking at single-core clock speed between the Ryzen 7 9850X3D (left) and Ryzen 7 9800X3D (right) in Cinebench 2026 single-core testing. We can see that the single-core frequency goes from 5.225GHz up to 5.470GHz on the Ryzen 7 9850X3D. This gives you a general idea of what to expect with core clock speed boosts with the new CPU.

REVIEW OVERVIEW

The FPS Review Score
10

SUMMARY

The AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D provides the fastest 8-core/16-thread performance from AMD in both productivity, content creation, and gaming performance. Though it is a minor, and negligible difference compared to the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, it does technically provide an upgrade path from older AM4 CPUs, or lower-end AM5 CPUs. It will give you the absolute best gaming experience for high-end GPUs. Considering this is the fastest gaming CPU you can buy on the planet, and it trounces the competition, it easily earns our top score.
