It was a rough Tuesday for Anthropic’s relationship with developers. Two separate incidents broke out yesterday that, taken together, paint a picture of a company making significant policy decisions without adequate communication to the people affected.
The first: Tom’s Hardware reports that Anthropic terminated a company’s entire Claude access without warning, citing a vague usage policy violation. Sixty employees lost access simultaneously, with no advance notice and no direct support channel offered beyond a Google Form for appeals. The company has not publicly disclosed what the violation was, and Anthropic has not commented specifically on the case. For businesses that have built internal workflows around Claude, this is a significant risk exposure: there is no SLA guarantee, no dedicated support tier for enterprise-scale disruptions of this kind, and apparently no warning system before the hammer drops.
The second, and arguably more broadly impactful story: Anthropic quietly updated its pricing page to remove Claude Code from the $20-per-month Pro plan. The Register, The New Stack, and others confirmed the change. The Claude Code product page was updated to reference access via “your Max plan” only, removing the previous language that included Pro. The Max plan starts at $100 per month, five times the Pro price. No changelog, no announcement, no email to existing subscribers.
Anthropic’s Head of Growth Amol Avasare posted on X that this is “a small test on approximately 2% of new prosumer signups” and that existing Pro and Max subscribers are not affected. The phrasing is careful, but the support documentation change does not match the “small test” framing: it was updated globally, not conditionally. As The Register noted, the Claude Code product page still said “Pro” at time of publication despite the pricing page saying otherwise, suggesting the rollout was messier than planned.
The developer response on various social media has been predictably sharp. A GitHub issue titled “Breaking Change: Claude Code CLI Removed from Pro Plan Without Notice” accumulated significant traction within hours of the change being spotted. Developer George Pu’s post flagging the discrepancy reached close to 900,000 views. The criticism follows a pattern that has surfaced with other AI providers: launch a powerful feature at an accessible price point to build adoption, then gate it behind a higher tier once the user base is established (Ed: Can’t we just say rug pull? Same thing, fewer words). OpenAI has done it with Advanced Voice Mode and Deep Research. The strategy works for revenue, but it erodes the trust that drove adoption in the first place.
For PC enthusiasts and developers who have worked Claude Code into their workflows: if you are an existing Pro subscriber, Anthropic says you are (allegedly) not affected. If you are considering signing up, the situation is unclear and worth watching before committing to the $20 tier for coding work specifically.
