It’s the end of a short-lived era as PlayStation boss Herman Hulst has reportedly let staff know that Sony is pulling back on PC releases. According to Bloomberg’s sources (via VGC), Sony will cease to release single-player games on PC moving forward, thus keeping exclusives on its PlayStation consoles. The decision seemingly supports earlier claims by Bloomberg and industry info leaker NateTheHate (via TechPowerUp), who both claimed the company was looking to decrease the amount of timed exclusives it was bringing over to PC.

SCOOP: PlayStation studio business CEO Hermen Hulst told staff in a town hall Monday morning that the company's narrative single-player games will now be PlayStation exclusive, confirming Bloomberg's reporting from earlier this year.Original story from March: www.bloomberg.com/news/article…

As sad as this news may be for PC gamers who are fans of PlayStation games, the writing has been on the wall for some time. While Spider-Man Remastered hit the PC scene with over 66,000 units sold, the numbers somewhat steadily declined with each new release. There were standouts with titles such as Ghosts of Tsushima, which saw over 77,000 units sold, Horizon Forbidden West, and The Last of Us Part II, but beyond those, numbers dropped significantly until Spider-Man 2 finally made its way over with just barely 22,000 units moved.

Aside from poor sales, another factor in this decision is likely due to the ongoing rumors that the console will not be releasing the PlayStation 6 until possibly as late as 2028. These rumors are, of course, based on the current chip shortage and its effect on the PC and console industries, but regardless means that Sony has to rely on exclusive releases to incentivize consumers to purchase its current PlayStation 5 consoles. Unfortunately, it sounds like this latest decision includes the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine, Ghost of Yotei, and Saros, none of which are expected to arrive on PC now.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
