Console Wars Are in Full Force as XBOX Reveals That Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution Will Both Be Exclusives

Sony and Microsoft have revived the console wars following announcements from each that exclusive releases are back on the table. The detente between the two console manufacturers seems to be at a crossroads, with future AAA games remaining on each’s hardware. The exception being that Microsoft has typically released its Xbox (now XBOX and it’s expected some folks will do a facepalm here) games on PC as well, and also, furthermore, expected with the push for XBOX gaming on PC. That being said XBOX’s new CEO took to social media to announce that The Coalition’s Gears of War: E-Day and Shapeshifter Games’ Clockwork Revolution will be XBOX exclusives.

Console exclusive releases have returned to the forefront of gaming since Sony announced that it would no longer focus on bringing its single-player titles to PC. Santa Monica Studios’ upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine game is one such release, and the recently announced God of War Laufey is expected to be as well. A differentiating point with XBOX is that Gears of War: E-Day comes from a franchise known for its multiplayer elements.

The other interesting twist in the revival of the console wars is that neither hardware manufacturer is expected to launch new models anytime soon, and quite possibly not until 2028, meaning that gamers are presently only left with a choice of older hardware. Sony did at least release the PlayStation 5 Pro in 2024 with improved specs over the original, but currently has an eye-watering price of $899.99 for the disc-less 2TB version, while Microsoft has not offered anything new, in terms of hardware upgrade, since the original Series X in 2020. The similarly spec’d Galaxy Black edition currently goes for ~$749.99. It’s already been speculated that both manufacturers, along with Valve, with its upcoming Steam Machine, will be selling their next-gen offerings in the $1,000 or higher mark, leaving new customers with the choice of buying old stock or saving for new to play these exclusive game releases.
