Ubisoft is celebrating the successful launch of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, which has set a new franchise record and helped reach a major milestone. Jokingly called the worst-kept secret in the gaming industry following numerous leaks over the years, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launched last week on July 9 and very quickly began showing signs of being a potential big hit for Ubisoft. However, things didn’t start as well as hoped, as early reviews criticized the publisher for including microtransactions.

Fans of the 13-year-old game were quick to point out that getting the $70 deluxe edition still didn’t provide all the content in the new game after discovering another $89 worth of in-game purchases. While most of the microtransactions are cosmetic, some could aid with game progress, such as crafting-related items. Fans have pointed out that this has somewhat been the norm in some AC games, but were disappointed by Ubisoft’s push for cash grabs, which include things tied to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Beyond that, the other biggest complaint regards its current 30 FPS cap with the game’s cutscenes, but a mod already exists to fix it, and the publisher has said a forthcoming update will address it.

“Since it first launched in 2007, the Assassin’s Creed series has sold more than 250 million games worldwide. The franchise is now established as one of the best-selling series in video game history. Recognized for having some of the richest, most engrossing storytelling in the industry, Assassin’s Creed transcends video games, branching out into numerous other entertainment media.”

All this aside, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced saw over 2 million copies sold in 24 hours, started with a mixed review status on Steam, and quickly reached a mostly positive ranking from 79% of its reviews, which total nearly 7,000. Ubisoft’s press release praises the game’s successful launch, which has also helped the franchise pass a new milestone with over 250 million copies now sold.

“Black Flag has always held a special place in the heart of the community, and ours.” said Martin Schelling, Head of Assassin’s Creed Brand. ”Bringing it back with Resynced was a promise to that passion for Edward’s adventures, and to the unique sense of freedom players experienced back then. Seeing so many players set sail on day one, along with the great reviews from critics, is the greatest reward we could have hoped for.”

  • 85% review score on Open Critic and 84% review score on Metacritic
  • IGN scored Resynced 9/10 and declared it “bigger and better in all the ways that matter”
  • Digital Foundry referred to it as “One of the most effective remakes we’ve ever seen.”
  • Scored 4.79/5 on the PlayStation Store and 4.7/5 on the Xbox Store

Players and reviewers alike have also given praise for the game’s improved visual effects, but the general consensus for those aiming for the best image quality is to use the game’s presets and not focus too much on tweaking settings. While many can express their disappointment in the game’s many optional microtransactions, it’s refreshing to see the older game back and so popular with both old and new fans.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
