With barely a week to go before Marvel’s Wolverine arrives on PlayStation 5, another title from Insomniac Games is rumored to still be in development. Venom made his debut in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and was voiced by the late Tony Todd, who said that he had recorded an extensive number of lines for the game, but the majority of them went unused in the game. Meanwhile, it was discovered following a 2023 data breach at Insomniac Games that a Venom project was in development. At the time, most of the focus was on Marvel’s Wolverine due to the many assetts which leaked online, that included a playable alpha build, but a Venom title was spotted.
A lot has happened in the last two years when it comes to PlayStation titles. From stepping away from single-player PC releases to the huge success of Arc Raiders (which no doubt has Sony execs thinking about how to tap once again into the online multiplayer cash cow), many studio closures, and Sony recently announcing it would cease physical media production, there have been many changes within the PlayStation ecosystem. Some have wondered what Insomniac Games plans to do with its Marvel IPs after Wolverine, and now it seems that a symbiote could be the next runner-up. According to information from insider Nate the Hate, “Venom is very much still in development as of my last check. As to when it’ll be announced, I don’t know.”
Meanwhile, the big question will be how a Marvel’s Venom game will look, or more specifically, sound, given that Venom voice actor Tony Todd passed away in 2024. It’s quite possible that his unused lines from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could be repurposed for it. One would hope that Insomniac wouldn’t try to use AI to finish his work, but anything is possible- that is, if his estate allowed for such a strategy. If so, this could be slightly similar to what was done with Val Kilmer and the last Top Gun movie. Regardless, and sadly, even if/when a Marvel’s Venom game is launched, it will likely be a PlayStation exclusive.
