Microsoft has announced that its latest Windows 11 build 26H2 has finally arrived and is warning, sorry, letting users and IT professionals know what to expect with the newest update. There is perhaps no other update, although NVIDIA had its share following its RTX 50 series launch, that can raise blood pressure more for users than a Windows update, that is, given the incredibly rocky road they’ve endured since Windows 10 was deprecated. The number of things broken but then thankfully fixed became a dizzying array of disasters for some who wanted to ensure their systems were secure throughout 2026. On that note, Microsoft has a current list of known issues and notifications identifying fixes that have arrived in 26H2.
Things fixed!
- USB audio devices might fail to start or produce no sound
- Domain-joined devices might lose their secure trust relationship with the domain
- Devices might experience a black screen or desktop loading issues after sign-in
What’s New?
The following is per Microsoft’s notification on its social media page.
- A smarter File Explorer: New productivity enhancements include AI actions for supported images, the ability to summarize OneDrive and SharePoint documents, quick actions for work and school accounts, and support for additional archive formats.
- Better Windows Search: Find what you need more easily with previews, better handling of typos and partial app names, clearer result types, and automatic indexing of frequently used folders.
- More accessible ways to use your PC: Magnifier adds more precise zoom and screen tint options, Narrator adds Braille Viewer and other improvements, and Voice access expands natural language commanding on supported Copilot+ PCs.
- More ways to make Windows your own: Start and the taskbar gain new customization options, including new Start menu views and sizing choices, additional taskbar positions, and a smaller taskbar option.

Microsoft has otherwise said that a phased rollout for the Windows 11 2026 update is in motion. Microsoft has also said that Enterprise and Education editions will receive support for 26H2 for up to 36 months while home users can expect up to 24 months of support and that the update should be a fast intall, often only needing a single restart is most scenarios. So there you have it, ready or not, 26H2 is here but let’s hope that it’ll be a smoother rollout than what we’ve seen over the year.

I set my system to reboot and update - came back to find it hung at a black screen with an adrenalin crash.
Had to power off/on and then re-enable my gpu/9070 xt in device manager and reboot again.
I'm going to hold off for a bit with my home rigs due to simply not wanting to deal with any complications right now but since it's technically a part of my job, I'm probably going to try and "upgrade" one of our laptops since I need to know in advance what I might be in for down the road, same for a workstation as well.
I tried the other day and it bombed and didn't complete... probably needed a user interaction and once it rebooted I tuned out.
Apparently it installed cleanly when I was away or sleeping. Went to go check if it was still pending and it wasn't there then checked winver and already at 26H2. no issues thus far, knock on wood!
Turns out not nearly as of a big deal at it may seem.

Not crazy about AI "features" being integrated.
Hoping as much as possible of that can be disabled and hidden.
I know I can just not use it, but it still makes me irrationally angry whenever I so much as see a Copilot or other AI UI element in my OS or software.
I don't like using products that make me angry.
I've made sure to uninstall anything Copilot related, at the very least. Luckily, apps and things can be uninstalled in this way, that's the least you can do to remove them. I take other measures, beyond that, restricting things best I can manually. O&O Shutup is a great free utility for disabling things.

Curious what your use case is for 192gb of ram and that many 4k monitors. Running simulators? Clearly it's not an AI/LLM optimized setup and that's what currently comes to mind for big builds these days.
our rigs are similar, you have me on ram for sure and I have you on GPU buy a bit for my use case.
