Disney has announced that The Little Mermaid has become quite the success for the studio, having broken records on Disney+ as one of its most-viewed Disney movie premieres ever, garnering 16 million views in its first five days of streaming. The movie, which was released on Disney+ on September 6, 2023, is a live-action adaption of the original 1989 animated classic that stars Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, and Halle Bailey, who plays mermaid princess Ariel. The Little Mermaid has made $569,539,932 at the global box office since its release in May 2023. It carries a 67% Tomatometer score, but 97% Audience score, on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie—which was directed by Rob Marshall and opened over Memorial Day weekend to $118.6 million in North America—was one of the top five highest-grossing films of the summer domestically with nearly $300 million.
2023’s The Little Mermaid builds on the incredible legacy of the original 1989 classic, continuing to bring the story to life through a treasure trove of merchandising, parks and resorts attractions, video games, books, and theater productions for millions of fans around the world. The release of the live action The Little Mermaid has also given a boost to Disney’s existing library resulting in tremendous engagement for The Little Mermaid animated films on Disney+.

Join Discussion →My wife watched this a couple of days ago and said it was a lot better than expected. We both thought it was going to be horrid but she said it was actually pretty good. I told her I'll take her word for it but might watch it with her later on after she cited how she watches all the motor trend car shows with me even though she doesn't always like them (I tend to get a kick out of Roadkill Garage).
Disney is desperate, I can absolutely see them throwing out a fake viewing figure to generate buzz. I just can't take anyone seriously anymore when it comes to entertainment. I only believe what I see with my own eyes.
I feel the same but I have watched more than a few theatrical flops via streaming this year and I ended up not agreeing with all the bashing they got online. I'm not saying any were masterpieces but Shazam Fury of the Gods and The Flash managed to somewhat stay true to the material even if the general populous wasn't into it. I'm pretty sure there was a third movie I felt the same about but can't remember right now, I think it was something on Peacock but after they made changes for the free accounts I haven't been going back to checking on new stuff as much and have forgotten what it was.
I do, however, totally agree, that Disney will produce whatever numbers it needs because word around the internet is that they are hurting, else why all the changes, plus another incoming rate hike? I trust my wife with this one though as she is a huge fan of this story and even if it's not one I'm into I believe her opinion on it. However, she still refuses to try and complete watching that Cinderella remake they did about a year or so. She was offended by it and simply said it wasn't good. I never even tried to watch that one.

That was one of my favorite shows when it was on YT, along with regular Roadkill. I stopped keeping up with those and the other related shows when they moved to Motor Trend On Demand though. Not that this stuff is hard to get, I can easily grab videos from the "community library", but I just haven't really felt like it. So I just end up kinda falling off with all those shows in the last few years.
Yeah I don't think I will ever bother to check it out myself. I and most people I know expected it to be terrible, but if your wife is a fan of this story and thought this version was much better than expected, I guess that's cool. Like you though, I'm just gonna take her word for it.

I was never a fan of comic book movies, so they were borderline to me already when they were at their best. I haven't even seen most of them.

There was a live remake a couple of years back.
I was a huge tech/comic book nerd in the 80s and 90s so I really got into the movies for a bit but I too have experienced the fatigue with them. I'll still watch certain ones that pertain to the core books I was into but not so much anything else.
