Introduction

Do you need to upgrade your aging GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER in 2024? Is performance holding back your gameplay experience? How much difference is there between the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER and GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER? In this performance comparison review, we will benchmark the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER versus GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER to find out the performance improvement you will receive if upgrading directly from a GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER to a GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER in 2024. If you are planning an upgrade, you will be able to see what kind of performance improvement you would get from this upgrade model-to-model between 2019-2024.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER was launched in July of 2019 as a refresh to the RTX 20 series Turing architecture-based GPUs that launched in 2018. The GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER was launched at an MSRP of $499, which replaced the GeForce RTX 2070 at the same pricing. If we use the CPI Inflation Calculator that would be around $609.81 today.

The GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER is based on the TU104 GPU die with 40 SMs, 2,560 CUDA Cores, 64 ROPs, 160 Texture Units, 320 Tensor Cores, and 40 RT Cores. The Boost Clock is 1770MHz. It has 8GB of GDDR6 on a 256-bit bus at 14Gbps providing 448GB/s of bandwidth. The TGP is 215W.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER was launched in January of 2024 as a replacement in price point for the GeForce RTX 4070 Ada Lovelace architecture-based GPU that launched in 2023. The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER was launched at an MSRP of $599, which replaced the GeForce RTX 4070 at the same pricing moving it down in price. If we look at it with inflation in mind, then the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER is slightly cheaper than the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER was, in today’s dollars, but practically very similar in pricing.

The GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER is based on the AD104 GPU die with 56 SMs, 7,168 CUDA Cores, 80 ROPs, 224 Texture Units, 224 Tensor Cores, and 56 RT Cores. The Boost Clock is 2475MHz. It has 12GB of GDDR6X on a 192-bit bus at 21Gbps providing 504GB/s of bandwidth. The TGP is 220W.

Just some brief comments on the specs above. You will notice that for the same power delivery, and ‘similar’ pricing in today’s dollars, you are getting higher specifications and features out of the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER than you were back in the day on the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER for the price and power. That’s just an interesting observation, architectural differences aside.
